BROWN & CALKINS, THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 1884. Time They Opened Thetr Eyes. San Francisco, which has always ‘reached out and got all of the bydraulic miner’s gold, is now complaining sbout dull times and scar. city of gold, and wondering what causes the change. Heretofore from fifteen to twenty millions of gold per annum has been poured into the lap of San Francisco without any apparent effort on its part to aid in the stream’s continuance. To show what interest was taken by the merchants of that selfish town, it is said when the Woodruff case was being tried that not a newspaper reporter was present to report the proceedings, not an outsider was on the ground, and no more importance was attached to the trial than if it had been an issue between the lowest and most ordinary kind of criminals. In the Woodruff case a question was to be settled whether a hundred millions of dollars’ worth of property which was yielding to San Francisco and the Government twenty millions annually was to be wiped out of existence, or continued to make our State the wealthiest on the earth, It was decided ad* versely to the chief industry of the State. When a social stink-pot such as the Sharon’ case was being unsarthed, allthe Bay papers filled their columns with the deadly poison and spread it broadcast over the world, Ifthe papers there are correct in their supposition that such ataff, which is only fit to be read in the presence of the lowest characters, _ is better appreciated in San Francisco than accounts of a trial where millions of dollars worth of property are at atake, then we can only wonder that an éarthquake does not swallow up a city which thus patterns after Sodom and Gomorrah in impurity. San Francisco merchants sve always ready to receive our gold, but when we need aid to save our property they invariably turn aside and give us the go-by, or assist in.our destruction, The time is coming when that city will need the yellow metal, and those who realize it first will probably take the lead in having hydraulic mining resumed, Tue value of the metallic products * of the United States is reported to be about $250,000,000, but ‘if the brasa in the cheeks of the Democratic editors who are shouting for the nonsination of Tilden as a ‘‘Reform” candidate, could be in some way extracted and sold at a cent a pound, the above figures would sik into a decillionth dilution. Army officers are being sent to the Government Hospital for the insane to be cured of deliruim tremens. Owing to the prevalent intemperance among officers in Washington a special ward is set apart for their treatment. A good many have lately been confined at the requests of their friends, and in same instan_ ces voluntarily. —————_——— ——_—_<> Tux New York Times makes ' the ‘the city ‘‘has outgrown the elevated road under Broadway.” Wary are leaky boats like certain out. ae ReREROSELN AOL CT NR HOTEL ARRIVAIS. —o— NATIONAL EXCHANGE HOTEL STANLY A. The ambitious project of constructing an island in Lake Michigan, opposite Chicago, is seriously to be undertaken this summer. The magnitude of this venture can be understood when it is known that the plans contemplate an area of forty acres, This island is tobe guarded by a break water seventeen feet in hight, It is to be placed one mile from the shore, where the depth of the water averages eighteen feet. One the shore side is tv be a landlocked harbor of seven acres, to admit lake craft of any size. The land is to be formed of sand and clay dredged from the lake, The face of the island is to be irregular, and the summit of the gradual ewell is to be the site for a grand hotel. The projectors number several experienced engineers, who have made_ their estimates on the basis of a total expenditure of $2,000,000. It is thought that the resort will prove popular asa place for summer cot°° A Sad Case. The Sierra Valley . Loader says thaton Thursday Mrs, Mary Maddox and Miss Laura Maddox’ were arrested by. Constable Danforth charged with being insane and were taken to Downieville for examination, Since:the death of Mr, T. H. Maddox, nearly two years ayo, these ladies have gradually been growing insane, and although they ‘have generally been peaceably disposed yet at times they get to quarreling betwee o themselves and it wasonly a week or so ago that the old lady drew a pistol and threatened to shoot the other, The nature of their hallucinations seems to be to claim relationship with everyone they see or have ever heard of. President Arthur is Laura’s brother and Queen Victoria is her cousin andthey also imaging that numerous individuals have been placed under their charge and that the whole world is managed by them.
