LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
TERRIBLE AccrpENt,—Yesterday morn
ing about 6 o’clock, the South Yuba bridge,
belonging to Cooper & Co, went down with
a freight on belonging to Thomas
Holden, who was driving. -He and the
tle
and freight destroyed. Holden, with his
‘team loaded with about 8,000 pounds, was
in company with a team belonging to
Chris. Allen, the latter being ahead. The
bridge is built of wood, braced above, ard
sustained in the middle by a heavy timber
running across the center of the stringers.
The bridge was built in 1856, and has been
repaired from time to time since.. It was
thoroughly repaired in 1868. after the
bridges above and below were destroyed
by floods. As we have before stated, Allen’s team had crossed and Holden’s was
following. The six horses of the latter
had passed over the middle section, when
the cross timber pulled over the bolt heads,
and the middle stringer gave way. The
wagon, six horses and driver, went down
into-the river, a distance of fifty feet.—
The river was running high at the time,
and wagon, horses and driver were swept
down by the current. Holden was not
seen after the team went down. Tom.
Canfield, driver of Gregory & English’s
stage, crossed Black’s bridge, which is
nearly five miles below where the accident occurred, by the river channel, at 10
o'clock, and saw the carcasses of three
horses and some float timber, supposed to
be parts of the wagon. Several kegs of
pickles and one or two sledge hammers
were picked up a short distance below the
biidge. The team consisted of eight
horses but two had been unhitched in consequence of one being lame. The freight
was loaded for Hagarty, of Moore’s Fiat.
We understand that Holden resided near
Newcastle.
