Rieu Mine at Wasuineton.—We learn that the cement claims at Brandy Flat, near, ‘Washington, recently owned by McGee and now by Mr. Woolsey.and others are being* ___. worked with the greatest. success, Atun. __nel has been run into the hill and the cement which is being taken out is literally filled with gold. Our informant states that $1000 was taken froma single car load. of _ this cement. The claims. adjoining Woelsey’s are owned by Messrs N. W. Knowlton (no wonder he did'nt want te be Sheriff of this county again) and Osear-Maltman of this city. They propose to erect « mill upon the claime at an.early day and as the mine is of the same character .of Woolsey’s the chances are that these two excellent citizens have got a big thing. Ifa few more such claims are opened in the vicinity of Washington that town will soon be of great importance. i Tue Soctat Party —One of the most . _ pleasant social parties of the season came. offat the National Exchange Hotel on Tues: day evening last._A large number ‘of ladies . and gentlemen were present who enjoyed themselves by danciug until a Jate hour.— Strawberries and cream were furnished in great abundance and the music was excellent. The party was a decided success’ in every respect andall present were delighted with the evening's entertainment. SPLENDID PicTURES.—S. T. Dodson, Esq., is canvassing this county for an excellent picture of our late President, in which Lincoln is represented as signing the Emancipation Proclamation. © This likeness is said to be the best yet issued. © Those who want an excellent pictute should wait until they see this one. Mr. Dodson has also pictures of prominent Union Genetals. je7-lw PROBABLE Suicipe,—We learn that Sam Whitmarsh, well known to the people of _. this county, who has been acting as agent of the California Stage Company, at Auburn, for more than ten years, attempted to com-. mit suicide yesterday morning, He shot _himselfin the temple, the ball running around and passing out above the eye. Heis ina eritical condition and no hopes are entertained of his recovery. The cause for the act is not known. THe MILITARY BaLt.—The Little York Union Guard will give their grand Ball at You Bet, this evening.The Military at that place have made extensive preparations to entertain their friends from abroad and all who go to You Bet to-night will have a gala time. The ball is intended as a benefit to the Company and their friends should be eure to beon hand. Everybody is invited toattend. Let the various Military Compa-. nies be well represented. ScHoo. Benerrr.—A party for the ben. efit of the Public School at Pleasant Valley will be given at that place this’ evening.— Those whe attend can rely apon a pleasant time and will aid the Union mea of that section to sustain the School. M. C. Briggs. Mr. Briggs was in the National: Convention which nominated Mr. Lincoln for his second term. He is one of the best-lecturers on this coast and his lecture upen “Lincoln and his murderers” 1s said to be his bert. Let all go and bear him to-night. Tickets fifty cents.
