TRE LATEST NEWS. It is said that President Arthor tion, F. J. Moses, ex-Governor of South ' The game played in Nevada county and elsewhere by Bothwell & Clark, the New York mining sharps, will teach their tenderfooted Eastern victims a thing or two in case the latter are willing to learn anything ' . at all in the matter of mining speculation. The New York Report, sie __ ‘= and_pretence in future about mining speech of Colonel Moulton asking Mrs. A--Askins, Downieville. “which was one of the first mediume through which Bothwell & Clark’s ‘prey got a warning, says: We have learned many lessons of late in the mining stock business, and while they may be very bitter ones, there is the consolation of feeling that experience has taught us something. There will be less sham stocks, less disposition te bite at any bait which may be temptingly brought to our notice. Eastern people are getting to look upon mining 4s a serious, rational business, where the same care is necessary as in any other business, Hitherto it has been regarded somewhat as a lottery, and investors have not been greatly dissappointed when they have not drawn prizes. If people will still invest in mining stocks as in a lottery, they should in future look at the management of the echemes, so as not to take any More chances of loss than is actually afforded by the schemes themselves. Skin games should secure little patronage. ————_______) ANTI-SLICKENS COUNCIL. The Supervisoral anti-debrjs committee met in Sacramento Tuesday, and the Bee boils down the business thus: “The most noticeable is the that the Secretary of War be memor ialized to remove Colonel Mendel), and the resolution asking AttorneyGeneral Hart to begin, in the State’s ‘ name, suits against all the hydrau ic mines now using the public streams » as dumps.” Those are about the cheekiest propositions yet. The fanatical anti-miners are surely not such all-fired fools as to think that their protest would prevail upon the Secretary of War to remodel the workings of his Department, or that in response to the demands of a few impotent howlers the Attorney-General would squander the whole State’s money in fighting the hyd-aulic miners, . Page Truckee ‘Republican Items,” Fishing is excellent in Donner Lake now. Large strings of chubs and trout are brought in daily. The weather at Tahoe is reported to be charming. The following are the figures on the Oregon Legislature at noon Wednesday : The Senate consists of 3l and the House of 60 members. The Republicans have, including the hold-overs, 15 Senators, and the Democrats 15 ; doubtful 1, with the probabilities in favor of the Republicans. In the House the Republicans have 30 and the Democrats 24; doubtful 6, of which 2 are probably Repubiican. Bayless, a farmer between fifty and sixty years of age, living about three and a half milesfsom Vienna, Il], on the Wabash Railroad, has been murdered. It seems he had been sitting by a small lamp reading, and the assassins entered, tied him to the chair in which he was sitting, then tied his hands behind him and his feet together. When found his feet were burned to a crisp by the lamp being held under them. They spit his head with an axe and searched the house. When through they cut the bridle with which he was bound to the chair and shoved him over on the floor, where he was found by the neighbors dead. There is no clue to the assassins: t Eciipsz Cuvers of 1879 and 1880 are thé finest chawpagnes in the market. wal? Choice Family Groceries. There has arrived at W. H.
