nce ate sept tt ee OO EOC A AAA LEE AAAS es ot The Daily Granseript. NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA.That tron Mine. a call yesterday from Mr.” E,W. Tuesday, Mareh 1, 1881. : PRI AI cncimnpeatticsemaen=} One Thing They isk. ‘The miners do tot ask the business men of Sacramento ‘‘to turn their backs upon their own people and their own city to systain a few foeign corporations it destroying our navigation and ruining our prop‘erty,” as ‘the Bee claims.—TRanSCRIPT. ease What, then, do they ask? "peak plainly and to the point.—Bee. ~ They ask that the business men in question use all honorable means--at their disposal to-stop the impotent vertheless aggravating howl! of =. Cowles, who is connected with the big iron mine that is operating over in Placer county, and. which _ has Targe charcoal kilns in Nevada county. There has been nothing done at the furnaces during the winter, as7 the roads hate been too soft to haul The Free Lance says: We received . ’ Hydraulic Mining in Canada. Tt seenis that they are about to get ‘to work mining for gravel in Canada, and-doitig it on the hydraulic mining principles, “An association has been formed in London to purchase some ground on the Riviere du Loup, in the county tf Beauee, Province of Hrabed,; Canada.. The property consists of 1,245, acres, held in fee simcoal from the kilns on this side of Bear river, and so very active operations are ngt going on at present, ‘The coming summer will be.a very busy one at the iron mine. Mr. Cowles informs—us_that—Bear-_river was very high daring the big storm. . The large boarding house, located on Hthea-Placer-bide of that-stream, and ‘certain newspapers like the Bee. and —-—-gertainawyers—tike Cad walader_to. the effect that the hydraulic miners must go. Nevadaceunty has contributed one-thirteenth of the costs entailed in a preliminary, and so far . satifactory, test of the plans provided for in‘the Drainage Law. She did so uncomplainingly and on. broader grounds than the present opponents of the Drainage Bill seém to be capathle of comprehending. . The miners ‘have not been ‘frightened by any ‘threats of litigation nor by the introduction of laws calen'ated: to place . them in the’ list“ of feloas. They know ther rights and are abundantly able to maintain them, as has been proyen in the past. Therefore when sneers-and-intendoes—sre—-the—only folks, was raiséd. up and floated some thirty or’ forty: feet, and —todged against some-strong oak trees. The building is 80 feet long by 40 feet deep. The big iron mine has had about $150,000 spent upon it, in all departments. — atthesdid 1c The Lene Ridge Mine. The San Juan Tifés says: The Lone Ridge Mining Co. completed their ditch:last week. It. is’ about 775 rods in length, with a carrying capacity of frou: 500 to 700°inches of-water._-The extreme lower end of the ditch is on “Fhurston’s ranch, near Cherokee, and is about 125 feet higher than the* Milton ditch.’ The Company will-construct a flame of about 560-feet, and from the end of thanks.thay got-in-retarn for f#VOr. e bores: to the mine the water will ing an onerous tax upon themselves to be app ied to ‘the benefit of people who live in other. patts of the State, they are likely to resolve upon casting aside all sentimental considerations and fighting the battle ‘out ‘on its direct issues only. a Not a Representative Organ. We are informed upon credible authority that the representative of a prominent business firm at Sacramento, while in this city seeking ordevs the other day, said in substance to one of our citizens who interrogated him on the.subject: ‘‘Lhe: bitter feeling displayed by the Bee towards the interests of Nevada and’ other . mining counties is a reflex of the ~ sentiments of but an inctioihdecable'. portion of the people of Sacramento, . Particularly.do the wholesale business mén of our city disapprove of the unwarranted and useless attacks made upon your people by that paper. ‘Tirere are few of them who do not favor the Drainage Act, and-a’ goodly part of that few who do not are, as intimated by the RecordUnion, apparently anxious to havt -13—butt—our—brainsout against the ‘stone wall that will confront us if it is repealed, in order that they, may make a good thing out of the fight.” We sincerely hope that the facts warrant this statenient. Cud walader's Unreliable Statethent. ——ey The San Juan Times is published ‘fon the spot,” and its editor knows every inch of ground along the Yuba and its tributaries, This is his unimpeachab!e testimony: George Cadwaladet stated ‘in speech made by him at an anti-debris meeting, at Sacramento, a few days ago, that “‘there are not more than 2000 persons engaged upon the hy= -draulic mines on the Yuba ‘river, 1,500 of whom are Chinamen.” We think Mr. George Cadwalader was talking to hear himself talk, and was talking about something of-which he knew nothing. If. he will start at Marysville and follow up the Yuba and allits tributaries to their source, -he could net -find 500 Chinanienen—} gaged in mining. He woukl find, however, more than 20J0 white men who earn their living by that souree ofindustry. This we know to acer tainty. This -ridge,. ftom French Corral to Eureka, alone gives employ? . ment to over 1000 white men, who if hydraulic mining was stopped, would have to seek homes in ‘the valley. We think Mr. George Cadwalader’s statements are notireliable, These Marked Papers ‘The Bee is very thuch distressed because numerous.copies of the Daity TRANSCRIPT. containing strictures up-_ on the course of that paper relative to the subject of hydraulic mining ‘have been forwarded to some of the leading business houtes of Sacramento, and wants to know why it was done.. Ia explanation we will state that they were sent in compliance ‘with the order of one of the largest business hyuses in this city—a house that buys thousands upon thousands of dallars worth of goods annually ~ from the wholesalers of Sacramento. Will the Bee do us the justice to = publish thie fact? be ‘¢onveyed through’ fifteen-inch iron pipe, which the “Company are now having manufactured. When completed, the Company will have a pressure at their mine of at least 60 feat. ° a * ~~ To-Night. The Party “The Allemannia Club have every assurance that their masquerade ball at. Hunt’s Hall to-night will be a grand success, © The attendance promises to be very’ large, and the numerous novel and rich costumes being prepared display thatan unusual amount of interest is taken in the, affair by party goers. : Those persons not desiring to mask will be admitted as. spectators’at the-rate of: fifty cents each. —-—_ 2-2-4 Another Dividend. ‘The Rising Sun Mining Company of California has just declared another. quarterly dividend of 15 cents a share. The 10,000 shares of Treasury. stock offered to the stockholders On Jantiary 28th were all promptly taken. The proceeds from this ~ sale to-dlouble the mining facilities. The company still has 35,000 shares_ of theeapital stock in the treasury. —~ +--+ Quarterly Meetings. The following are the dates for the Methodist quarterly meetings to be held in‘Sacramento District diring March: ‘Orevitle,; «2d; Browns: ville, 5th; Bownieville, 8th; North San Juan, 12th; Indian Springs; 14th; Marysville, 17th; *Yuba City,’ 19th; Butte Circuit, 22d; ‘Williams, 24th; Nevada City, 26th; Grass :Valley, 7th; Dutch Flat, 30th. ces : Notice te Masters. ‘Persons attending ‘ the Alemania Club’s party in costume to-night will ‘confer a: faver ‘on the newspaper reporters by bringing with them cards onwhich are‘plainly written their ‘ownnames and the title of the eharacters they assume,, which will be received at the door by members of the press engaged in getting the list of all present, = > © > ----—-——— Personal, Mr. A. D. Griffin, agent for E. W. ' Johnson, arrived in -this city from . Boston yesterday. .sHe came for the purpose of settling up the affairs of the New Yerk and Bostoa Gold Mining Co.npany, and wil. inake such arrangements as may be necessary for fature operativns. Mr. W. J. Smart,M. E., who is spoken of as a ‘‘gentleman of, great experience in gold. mining in Galifornia}” has madé a report oa the property, in which hé says: ‘‘The result-of our prospeetiig on the bed rock in thé bed of the river was from 5 cents to $1.50 td the pan of 25 Ibs. of gravel, whith should ‘pay. very largely economically and advantageously worked. ‘The bahks of the ‘river’ also prospected well, The main lead being exposed at two different points, oe at the upper eastern boundary, and the other at a distance ofabout three-quarters of «a hile below*on the same side of the river, with indications of its cross= img to the opposite bank of the river at a point below on the property. “The depth of gravel in. this lead will range from 30 to 50 feet, the exact depth being impossible to determine without drifting on the bed rock'to its lowest point ; our pros— pecting of this lead. yielded from 1 to 20 cents to the pan of 28 Ibs. of gravel which.would pay you well to sluiceand largely tohydraulic, which I would recommend as the best way to work it. There-is abundant water in the river for all purposes, and suffor all work’ by either method. ‘The. natural advantages are very favorable. You have good timber in abundance in the immediate vicinity, a railroad within 20 tniles of the property. The price of a good class of labor at this point is frcm 80 cents to $1 per day. “There-are two small streams:running into the Du Loup river on the property that I understand from the people here have yielded well, but I did not prospect them to any extent.” Twe seasons have beet devoted to the explorationand opening up of these deposits, and Mr. A. A. Hum= phrey, who has conducted this work, estimates that there aré 30,000,060 cubic yards of gravelin sight, carry— ing gold at the rate of 30 cents” per cubic yard, equal to 9,000,000. The cost of washing this gravel will be two and one-half eents per yard, equal to $750,000—leaving a net profit of $3,250,000, or £1,650,000, from this part of the property: alone. In the report.on this property by Mr. Smart, it is stated that they have got 5,000 inches of water, and the prospectus says: ‘‘A head of 150 feet can be obtained for one-twentieth the cost for the same amount of power in California,” ; It seeins the assogiation is to pay £80,000 fully paid up shares, and £15,000 in cash for the property. It is intended to start work at once on ficient quarts. We shall watch this hydraulit mining experiment in Canada with interest, but think they could have got geod ground a great deal cheaper out here by buying at first hautds, : .
