We gather the substance of the
following items from the Tidings
of Wednesday : 2
The Empire mine is looking
well in its lower le¥el; and has
more quartz than the present mill
can handle. \ Water power will be
turned on in a few weeks. se
The New York Hill Company
have found quite a large ledge in
the 13level north. It shows considerable gold, and is the deepest
dévelopment made in the mine.
The Crown Point is still doing
The machinery is to be enlarged.
The Idaho mining company
have let a contract for running the
tunnel and making the ditch
which will carry the water to the
Badger mine. The tunnel and
ditch will be between 300 and 400
for particulars as to the expense of
yidding this community of himself.

The tunnel and ditch will take

The Idaho mine is looking well,
the 15 and 16 levels containing
rich pay-ore. The Idaho has just
declared its 197th dividend.
The horseshoe is idle at present,
but willresume operations as soon
as the winter is over. The: machinery upon this mine was inadequate to handle the water i in wet
weather.
The North Star is now pumping
and sinking. The shaft is down
1400 feet, andhas a good paying
ledge in the bottom.
Next week will determine the
fate of Allison Ranch mine as far
as the French syndicate is concerned.

Speaking of the Signor, the Santa
Rosa Democrat of a recent date
says: ‘‘A large, select and intelligent audience, variously estimiated at from 800 to 1,000, greeted
his entertainment last night. To
say the audience was enthusiastic
would be expressing it mildly, for
they were fairly wild with delight.
Signor Bosco is an accomplished
and marvelous _ sleight-of-hand
performer, and some of his skillful manipulations and puzzles
challenge the insight of any man.

A Bombshell.
The following preamble and
conundrums were proposed to the
Board of Supervisors of Yuba
county the other day, for adoption, but of course they were laid
on the table:
‘‘Wuereas: Large amounts of
money have been drawn from the
Treasury of this county for the
‘prosecution of debris suits which
have been disbursed under direction of C. E.* Sexey, by the antiDebris Committee of this Board
without making a report, therefore the following questions are
propounded to said Committee :
_ “Ist. Why isthe debris litigation conducted with favoritism to
one section and a spirit of bitter
persecution used in the prosecution of the Smartsville mines?
“2d. Why is it the mines of
New York and Ohio Flats have
been allowed to continue unmolested ?—
“3d. Why. has no suit been
brought against the Pioneer mine,
owned by Grant & Chapman,).also
the-Cleveland mine? . :
“4th. .Why has the suit. of
Yuba Co. vs. James Arnott et al.
of Sierra Co., commenced Feb. 25,

Lewis Morrison and Rose W ood,

hundred and thirteen families
from Germany will staré on the
Ist of May. The agent comes
from Chicago next week to go over
Northern California with W. H.
Martin, Secretary of the International Immigration Union.They

immigrants have $1,000 to $1,500
a piece, and want cheap lands.

Tur surveyors on the Giant
Forest Railroad, says the Tulare
Register, reached Tulare Wednesday, and the preliminary .work
has now been done nearly the
whole way from Tulare to the
timber. Mr. Keller, informs us
that the grade up to within two
miles of the best timber is even
better than at first supposed. The
last two miles will be a cable
road, such as they now use in
Mendocino and other lumbering
sections. Anew grip has been invented that’ goes up. and down,
‘hand over hand,”’ so to speak.

D, Brown, the.Grass Valley man
who banged Ed. Roberts over the
head with a whisky glass. A.

he was fully justified in the attack, while Roberts’ friends say
it was without provocation. One
report of the fracas reaching here
is that the injured man had: been
ona “time,” and dropping into a
saloon asked the crowd to drink
with him; that Brown made a remark about Roberts not having
the money to pay for what he got;
that Roberts became aggressive in
speech and manner, and that
Brown retorted by throwing the
tumbler.Another version of the
deserving of punishment. Brown,
is spoken of as having been in numerous rows before.
