(% oF Bh Buily Teanseciy, _ NEVADA of. CALIFORNIA, arene . _ ‘Tae VeLocirepe.—The inventive genius “of the world is aroused and at “work upon the bicicle, andif the same BLASTING AGENTS.—The San Francisco Herald, speaking of new blasting agents, says: Giant powder is a dry }@émpound, having mygh the appearance of the saw dust produced in sawing . soapstone, and of about one-half the: "specific. gravity of the same. It ape . proaches as near to absolute safety as . . ‘ean be expected from any explosive of this kind. Tt cannot be exploded by Geass VaLeyIreMs. —We obtain the followmg from the. National: About SL o'clock Sunday. evening, some oe lain entered the store of H. Michael, on Mill street, picked up, and walked off} chest, of. tobacco. werth about} with a ‘$40. The front of the store was closed, at the time but one ef the iron doors was ajar, and the tobacco being near the door the: thik had. = trouble to }~ advancement is made twelve months, as~has been made in ‘the “past year, the “wheel horse” bids -fair te become of some practical benefit, was his hobby. ~~ thved-from White Pine yesterday. -He Already they are used in many places where the grades are easy, in going to and from business. In pattern and style the machines are very diverse, but the most practicable yet introduced is the two wheel velocipede. In] England a unicicle has been inveated, with a ' . twelve feet in diameter, and the rider sits over the ‘tire on a spring saddle, propelling his single wheel by placing his feet. uport short ‘stilts connected with cranks, and he expects in this way to make twentyfive miles per hour. A two wheeled miachiae has also been invented, propelled. by steam. It is intended to carry 200 pounds of steam, and will tun with 25 pounds as fast-as the velocipede can be propelled with the feet. Up to January of this year sixty patents had been granted upon the’ velocipede. The first of them was issued on the 26th of June, 1819, The revival of the velocipede is in conse= quence of the application of the crank to the fore wheel. It was formerly propelled .either by the hands or by ' pushing with the feet upon the ground. Several riding schools have been established for lady velocipedists in New York, and an exchange says: “With a proper teacher of their own sex, and with suitable dresses for the preliminary practice, ladies can obtain such a ‘command over the velocipede in one week's practice, of an hour daily, that they can ride side saddlewise with the utmost ease.” Henry Ward Beecher isa velocipidist, and ina recent lecture upon Rational Amusements, said: “One of the great questions of the day was in relation to the “coming man” and how he was to come. He thought he was coming on a velocipede—-a new machiae that was _ bound to play a prominent part in the eategory ofamtsements—a toy to some, an instrament of pleasure and great use to others. He had purchased two for his own boys and there was every prob. ability of his riding one himself. He Was not too old to learn, but he hoped it would not be said that the velocipede too old to learn, and he would not at all be surprised to see, in a short time hence, a thousand velocipedists wheele ing their machines to Plymouth church,” a —— Wuire Prne.—W. C. Randolph ar. thinks that “there are some rich mines in the District, but that it is much overrated and there is a great deal too much excitement about it, Living-costs about four dollars a day, and many of . : those who have examined the District are returning to California, satisfied that they can do better here.’ Those in the District who ought to know, es timate that not more than one hundred hands are employed in the mines of the entire District, and ihe majority of holders stop as soon as they strike chloride, for fear they might run out of ore. The aggregate capital steck of companies incorporated in San Fran. cisco is probably $80,000,000, and many of these incorporated own claims that -have sold at from $5,000 to $8,000, which are now represented on paper at from $1,500,000 to $2,000,000. On Mon-day four companies were incorparated with an aggregate stock of $8,000,000. We believe that many of these companies are outrageous swindles, and that the ground they hold is no better better for mining purposes than Cape Cod. Those who buy White Pine, stock, , knowing these facts, deserve to-be-vic~ timized. Spurious incorporations and in the next His auditors were not . the application of fire, as. it simply ig‘nites and consumes away in a slow, burned out. It can only be exploded by the application ofa percussion cap attached to ordinary fuse, or by heavy concussion under pressure: It is not affected by time, by exposure to the atmosphere, or any amount of moisture— as out ofit. It is customary in mining to tamp all vertical. and inclined holes with water, as that is more quickly done and serves the purpose . quite as well as sand or earth. This compound possesses’ one’ objectionable feature, however, which should be stated in this connection, and that is, the amount of poisonous gas it emits in explosion. There is no smoke produced by the blast, but instead, there results this gas, which has the effect to produce . violent headache if inhaled. This is easily obviated by remaining away from the scene of the explosion for a few minutes, until the gas becomes dissipated—which it does in one fourth the time it takes for the smoke of powder to clear away after a blast. Where this powder has been adopted in mine work, a saving of from thirty three to forty per cent. has been effected. One feature that adds materially to this saving, is the adaptability of small steel, which enables a man to hold and strike his own drill, using a common ‘hand hammer for the purpose. It has been found, upon experiment, that with drill as many feet of holes ina day as two men can accomplish with the com. mon drill: with a one and a half inch bit; and that a charge of the giant powder, in the small bore hole, proves more effective than ordinary powder in fhe large one. The giant powder is gradually making headway against the prejudice of old miners, and the serious opposition presented where large class. es-of Cornishmen are engaged. There are probably-one hundred companies and private enterprises, which exclu. sively employ it, at a saving of*from one third to one half of what the same amount of work cost them before its introduction. « News Irems.—From the Union’s telegrams we get the following: The Senators and Representatives are engaged in their*respective houses, re-organizing Committees. It is rumored that Stewart declines to be Secretary of the Treasury, and that . \Grant will withdraw the appointment. Another report has it that Stewart will accept, and put his business in thé hands of Trustees for charitable purposes. Griswold’s friends are urging his appointment as Secretary of the navy. . ° Washburne has entered upon the duduties of Secretary of State. except through the Departments. President Grant has canceled another defaulter’s.pardon, His administration promises to be rough on thieves. Rosecrans is_in’ Mexico, supposed to . be negotiating important matters. The San Francisco Herald has the following : Boutwell, it is reported, will be Secretary of the Treasury. The Legislature of North: Carolina has ratified the Suffrage Constitutional Amendment. © — President Grant denounces the Tenure-of-Office Act to Congressmen. who he will-make noremovals except for cause, It igsaid that Grant will soon recall Ministers Johnson, Dix and Webb. ok either Johnson or Dix. f President Grant and family went to the Metropolitan Methodist Church “smouldering condition; until entirely + ‘exploding with as great force in water . three quarter inch steel one man can No-applications.foroffice are-received-} visit him, and says if it is not repealed-. is believed that Washburne will succeed . been ‘suspected. The Hartry -mine has been leased by. the owners, Messrs. McLaughlin, Loutzenheiser, and Jos. O’Keete, to John Ford and-a company of about twentyfive men. The mine has been pumped out, and work. was commenced Monday by taking out rock. Frank-Morse started the stamps at work Monday morning at lis mill. hasalarge quantity of good looking rock-on hand, and the stainps will be kept busy. Work has been resumed on the Wisconsin mine. From the Union we get the following items: Some little rain would not hurt the farms and orchards of this vicinity. The grain and grass which have just began to show green blades above the ground can not grow to a great hight nor bear heavily unless the clouds send down their moisture. The air has been for several days very drying in its character, and the sunshine is get-}—— ting warm. Hector Benjamin, the heir to $23, 000, has been found, and is living near Nick Turner's mill, in Butte county, He formerly resided in this county. Robert Winkley, a man about sixtyeight years of age, was brought on Monday toGrass Valley to consult Dr.Thornton about his eyesight. Last Summer Mr. Winkley was breaking rocks, when a small fragment flew into his left eye destroying ‘the sight entirely. ‘Since then his right-eye hasgradually lost its power, and the man is entirely blind. The surgeon could do nothing for him, of course, as both eyes are gone. Since his misfortune Mr. Winkley has been taken care of by our bighearted friend Charley Morrison, who keeps the Half-way Station, on the Colfax road, Charley had to take his blind old charge home with him, last evening, and for whom there is no ray of we wins or hope. oe —The Oakland Picnaibigh
