A Good One. ee
The San Juan School District has recently raised money to purchase a school bell,
and as Judge O. P. Stidger is one of the
Trustees, he desired to make the best bargain possible. Knowing the liberality of
Gen. Redington of Sacramento, he wrote,
enquiring “‘if a bell which had been used
on. one of the steamers, but which was not
now in use, could be purchased at a low
price.” The General supposed from the
letter that some clergyman had written for
@ bell as a donation to a church, and answered accordingly, directing his letter to
“‘Rev.O, P, Stidger,” and saying that he
“*would be pleased to furnish them a bell,
but all the bells of the company not now in
use had been donated to some church
or Sunday school.”

‘They are now performing at Grass Valley,

Leath ofan Old Mesident,
C. Beckman yesterday received a letter
from San Francisco announcing the death
of L, P. Johnson, who some years ago kept
the Golden Gate Hotel in this city, and afterward resided-at Grass Valley, where he

resided in San Francisco, wh re he leaves a
wife and child to mourn his loss.
