Knowing the liberality of Gen. Redington of Sacramento, he wrote, enquiring “‘if a bell which had been used on. one of the steamers, but which was not now in use, could be purchased at a low price.” The General supposed from the letter that some clergyman had written for @ bell as a donation to a church, and answered accordingly, directing his letter to “‘Rev.O, P, Stidger,” and saying that he “*would be pleased to furnish them a bell, but all the bells of the company not now in use had been donated to some church or Sunday school.” his being mistaken for a parson.
