AN ACCIDENTAL INVENTION, fC} i 2 che fs Probably the First Man Whe Ever Used the stuicesbax and Rif tes for Minin. , Col, Eddy, father of mine host of the National Exchange Hotel of this city, claims the credit of having originally intreduced-the sluice-box and riffles for mining ptrposes, the first being evolved as a matter of necessity, and the latter owing their origin to an accidental discovery. He gives the fellowing account of his connection with this important subject: Iu the Spring of 1850 when -all operations were being carried on by the aid of the long tom and rocker, he located a claim in the ravine just /city, There were several claims beto permit him to run tailings upon their ground, leading from his “location through theirs and to,a-point below. Qn the hottom of the sluice, wherever the different sections joined, he nailed wooden cleats to keep the water and gravel from: leaking .thréugh., At a rocker, and for one day manipula ted the dirt that came down to it, At the end of that day he fouttd that the rocker had saved scarcely any gold.’ Going along up the sluiee -he ‘found behind each-ofthe cleats au merous sparkling particles of gold that had ledged there: He -abandoned the use of the rocker, increased the number of cleats, and thea commenced what he says was the California, and probably in the whele world se-far-ashe knows. -The sluice aud rifiles immediately became popular, catsing the priee of lumber toadvance rapidly, The Colonel says the only thing he regrets about his diseovery-is that he did not have it patented and thus win ‘fame and fortune, = en ' Pog Tales, ets. tae, The Free Laace man spregds himself out over a column of his paper it-@ vain endeavor to ‘produce a smarter dog than the one owned by James Spargo-and immortalized by the TRanscripr, He mentions one canine that likes to hug a hot stove, angther that is in the habit of stealing meat from a butcher shop, a third that formed a strong attachment for a doctor because he (the dog) had a tapeworm and wanted it cured, and so on. ad libitum. The Spargo purp still wears the crown, however. The only thing. Grass Valley has thatNevada City can’t discount is the debating society, »The Operatas.
