ONBVADA GITY, CAL.
Giant Powder and Billiard Cues. .
On Friday night last, David Rob_erts was engagedin a game ef billiards
«atthe Pennsylvania Saloon, Grass
Valley. He was suspicioned of haying made up his mind to go to work
at the Eureka mine. ‘ William Hoar
came in, and going up to Roberts,
asked him if he was going to work at
the Eureka mine. Rogers replied
hie might do so. “He was then asked .
if he intended to work giant powder,
and he said he would do as others
_ gid in the mine.Hoar thereupon . .
_-~strack him a heavy blow over the+head with the butt of a billiard cue,
~ felling him to the floor, inflicting an
ugly wound on the sidd of the head.
Hoar was arrested and taken before
Justice Davis upon the charge of assault with a-deadly weapon, with
intent to do great bodily harm. By
some process not known in the bdoks
and by which somebody became liable for compromising a felony, this
offence was compromised and the defendant discharged. Upon the faets
being known to the officers here, a
complaint for assault with intent to.
. commit murder was lodged, and UnMer Sheriff Potter went to Grass
Valley, but Hoar-could not. be found,
‘Those who violate the laws will be
_"_punished, and: if officers of the law
permit compromises in such offenses,
they. will find -themselves before the
Grand Jury ‘upon the charges for
which they are liable. Officers must
enforce the laws of the State.

The relaxation of nervous energy which
creates an indisposition to physical or men. _
tal effort; so strong as almost to amount to
positive inability, and which we term laseitude, proceeds from a variety of causes. }
The principal of these are constitutional debility, heat of the atmosphere, coupled with
humidity, climatic changes, and the physical prostration consequent upon a long ii
ness, But if the nervous system is unduly .
relaxed, something is required to brace ‘.
. ap. That something is Hostetter’s Stomach
Bitters, which is universally recognized as
the most ‘complete and_ speedy recuperant
efthe physical forcesim existence. It has
een so thoroughly and widely demonstrated
as tobe a matter of positive certainty and
familiar knowledge, that the Bitters will
not oniy rebabilitate the physique, ‘when
shattered and wasted by disease, but ‘will
also, if taken systematically, actually compensate the ednstitutionally feeble frame
for its deficiency of strength, and by infusing new life into a -weak aystem, endow it
with the health and vigor which Nature has
deniéd it, .The Bitters also enable the body
to'resist the enervating influences of heat»
humidity, and changes from a temperate to
a hot climete. It is on these accounts especially to be recommended to travelers and
residents in the torrid zone, and persons
subjected toabrupt transitions in temperature. ,
