Hoar was arrested and taken before Justice Davis upon the charge of assault with a-deadly weapon, with intent to do great bodily harm. By some process not known in the bdoks and by which somebody became liable for compromising a felony, this offence was compromised and the defendant discharged. Upon the faets being known to the officers here, a complaint for assault with intent to. . commit murder was lodged, and UnMer Sheriff Potter went to Grass Valley, but Hoar-could not. be found, ‘Those who violate the laws will be _"_punished, and: if officers of the law permit compromises in such offenses, they. will find -themselves before the Grand Jury ‘upon the charges for which they are liable.
