juarter rid. : of the itation. iraess, ,, t gainanage, ; WwW Osited proved rity of K, pada. ~ cifics, Devasla Dail y Transcript, . TUESDAY MORNING, MARCH: 14,LOCAL MATTERS. ‘THE CHRISTIAN COMMISSION.—On Sun. . day last, the agents of the Christian Commission addressed the people of this city at the Methodist Church. In consequence of the bad-weather, the ‘audience was not 86 large as it would otherwise have been. The discourses were listened to with marked atten-. _ tion, and many affecting incidents were . related by the speakérs. They told of the relief given the wounded ‘and dying, and how the anxions enquiries of friends had been anewered by the agents. In the camp and on the field, the agents are ever at hand, ready and eager to alleviate pain and smooth the couch of the dying soldier. An incident re‘lated by otie of the speakers, shows that. the hearts of the soldiers are enlisted in the ease for which they are fighting, and the fortitude with which they endure suffering. A Chaplain imprisoned at Libby prison was exchanged, and while tuking leave of his associates he came to one who was almost gone, from starvation” “The poor eniaciated . hero, clothed in filthy rags, as he held out his bony fingers to the Chaplain said, Uncle Abe not to back for us boys; we are willing to perish to save the'nation.’’ Many other like incidents were related, which show that the spirit which oun make the hero embrace death for his country’s honor actuates the Union army. The Christian and the Sanitary Commissions have 8 broad field for work and should be liberally ustained by. the people. They appeal to loyal men in behalf of suffering soldiers, who are not the instruments of a tyrant and who do not fight for hire, but who are noble specimens of the American people, with hearts in the cause for which-they fight. About fifty dollars was raised by collection at the . meeting, and a monthly contribution of abont $40 started. We have no doubt this amount willbe largely increased when the ladies appointed shall visit Rcahincsans ae! ae various districts in this city. The following ladies were placed on tne} committee: Mrs. M. Torson; Miss Mary ere Mise Anna Irwin ; ; Mrs. Dr. Hunt; Mrs. G.K, Farquhar; Miss $. J. Jewett; Mrs. W. C. _ Stiles; Mrs James Metro; Miss Maggie Murchie; Miss Hélew Murchie; Miss Fanny Berry; Mrs. M, Milliken; Mrs Mary Colby; Mre. A ia Pies; Miss M. E. Hubbad. The committee met yesterday, and was organized by the election of Miss Anna Irwin President, Miss M. E. Hubbard Seere“tary, Mrs.Mary Torson Treasurer. A meeting of the committee was called at the Union Hotel on Wednesday next, at five o’clock P. M. i Game CaPprukep.—A couple of gentlemen engaged in mining, a short distanee from this city, captured a fine specimenof the goose family on last Saturday. They were at work near the rear of a garden, when their attention was attracted by the noise of aflock of geese flying over. They suspend-. . ed work and while gazing ata long line of . fowls. they heard the noise.of wings behind ‘them,.and observed a gouse so near that they were able to “shoot it with a shovel.” The bird was winged and both sportsmen _ pitched headlong over rocks and sluice boxes to secure their game. It was brought to town-and presented toe a gentleman here, the capturers being rewarded by sundry “cocktails.” All supposed ‘that the goose had: become tired and left the flock. In the evening, a gentleman who owns several fine China geese, missed one, and on making inquiry, found that the Celestial fowl, hear. ing the cries of the passing flock became ambitious and attempted to follow them, but could barely get to thetep of the garden fence and had to come down in the diggings. The owner found his property uninjured, the gentlemen learned the difference betweena Chine and a, wild goose, and the entire daniage can be covered by the cost of a bottle of . “cocktails.” Strange to say, neither of the gentlemen. boast of their success aw hunters.
