The Benefit of Advertising.
“Talk about the benefits of advertising,”’ says the Burlington Chronicle,
“down in Florida, the other day, a
family lost a child, which they supposed had strayed away from home and
got lost. -After searching for three
days, the frantic parents placed an advertisement in the nearest newspaper.
Imagine the surprise of the parents,
upon going tothe door next morning,
to see a monster alligator upon the
door step, where he had disgorged the
child alive and died himself, The ‘ad’
back their darling child; they sold
the alligatur’s hida for $25, and the
parents are showing the child at all
the dime museums in the land at $50
per week. Does advertising pay?

Burned Up a Piereé Old Bear.
He was a venerable and intelligent man

telling a New York Hvening Sun reporter of
the true inwardness of California life in the
foot-hills of the sierra. ©
“Thad several very curious adventures
down there,” he said, “and, by the way,
young fellow, if you ever happen to go to
that region you had better throw off your

* As to your question about grizzlies, ll
tell you my first and rather remarkable experience with one of those varmints. I was
a kid, not yet twenty, and new to the region
of the sierras, having come from the East
but a few months before. Ona moonlight
night early in April I was gently meandering home on muleback. I was unarmed
with the exception of a pocket-knife, for I
had foolishly lent my pistol to a friend early
inthe day. I had almost reached the ranch;
having only a short stretch of chapparal to
pass. I had heard the settlers allude respectfully to old Ephraim. They said he
was fiercest in the spring, after his winter's
siesta. He’s alwaysan ugly customer, and
after a man has had a wipe or two from his
talons there is seldom enough left of that
man to tell the tale, . :
‘On this evening I speak of I was dog
