A rather intelligent looking young

as well as his manner of speaking .
could not but impress a listener with
the idea that radical changes in the
community were imperatively necessary to secure the interests of .
white labor. -He said: ‘“‘E went to
the ——— mine, and asked for work.
I told them I did not have a cent,
and had been halfstarved for aweek.
That I was willing to do anything

my living. I was told they hadn't .
anything forme todo. I asked them .
for God’s sake to let me work in the
place of aChinaman I saw there, and
for the same.wages he was gettiny.
I was told that they had tried the
Chinaman, and knew he was a guod

chances in hiring me. It is no wonder that some of us white men
lie and steal. We've got to do it, orstarve.
