A Lager Beer Millionaire.
The man who first introduced this
now universal beverage in New York
—lager beer—died on Sunday, August 6, 1882, of paralysis, In 1843
he came to New York a poor young
man, a cooper and brewer, where he
earned $8 a month. Soon afterward
he sent for his sweatheart, Anna
Hoffinan, who 2ame over the sea_to
they were married. He continued
on until the outbreak of the _Rebellion, when he first began.to brew
lager beer. It wasso popular that
it soon thade him rich, and Joseph
Dvelger died a millionaire,
@ne Too Many.
A gentleman who observed Johnny
carefully taking the census of a company assembled in the parlor awaiting a call to supper, remarked :
“What is the matter, Johnny ?”
“Why,” returned the urchin, with a
troubled air, ‘there’s nine of us,
counting me, and mamma _ has gone
and cut the two pies into quarters,
and that only makes eight pieces,”
— pe
One Little Song.
“Now, darling, will you grant me
one favor before I go ?”
‘Yes, George, I will,” she said,
drooping her eyelashes and getting
her lipsin shape. ‘What is the favor I can grant you ?”
“Only a little song at the piano,
love ; I am afraid there is a dog outside waiting for me, and I want to
scare him-away.”
Telling it very Short.
“Tl tell it, sir, in few words if I can, but
the story would fill abookif justice was
done to it.”
“Surely, Michael, but put it short this
time 80's I can squeeze it into a page of letter paper.” ;
Here you are, then, and there are thousands of people here in Binghamton, N. Y.,
who will testify'to the truth of what I say.
My name is Michael Guilfoyle. I am seventy-four years of age. For about nine years
I was almost shut out from the world by
rheumatism. I had peddled small wares in
this city for years, and had to stop altogether. At the best:of:tjmes I could only
hobble miserably about ‘with my cane. 1
was bent nearly double with pain and weakness, and my hands were useless to labo
with. I was but the poor wreck of a.once
strong man. None of tl.e medicines usually
given for rheumatism did me the least. good
sir. My old friends and customers forgot
me, as though I were under ground,
‘With the ends of my nose andthe tips of
yny toesTurn d up to the roots of the daises,’
“My days and nights were udleful and
painful. Ihad no hope exceptin death.
That is God’s truth, and Mr. Mosher, here,
knows it.
“I can’t tell how, but Parkers Tonic
curelme, That was three years ago, I’m
lively as a cricket now, sir, and go my business rounds évéry day, rain or shine. You
may tell this to all the world, and refer the
dcubters to me.’
This-preparation, which has ‘been’ known
as PARKER’S GINGER Tonic, will be called simply Parker’s Ton:c. This change is made
for two reasons: fist, because ginger is an
unimportant flavoring ingredient, and secondly, because unptincipled dealers, deceive their customers by substituting infe
rior preparations under the name of ginger.
There is no change, howeve?, in the preparation itself, and all bottles remaining in
the ha:ds of @ealers wrappe! under the
name of PARKERS GINGER Tonic, contain the
genuine medicine if the fac-simile signature
of Hiscox & Co, is at the bottom of the outside.wrapper.
