LUsT To THE CROAKERS.
There are some people so constituted that they see the dark side of every
picture. If a ray ‘of sunshine and a,
shadow fall parallel across their path,
they will see only.the latter, and set to .
cursing the weather. They will rail
at the fate whi¢gh linked the rose and,
thorn. When rain falls to refresh the!
face of nature they say itis too wet;
and when the sun shines they see a
drouth in every ray. They go. through”
life taking each situation by. the roushest handle it may possess.
They are not confined to-any partieular community. There are even
some of them here in Nevada City,
and-they are never so well contented .
with themselves, if not with the rest
of the world, as when the emergency
arises that brings their infirmity to
the front. :
They were here a great many years
ago when the Banner quartz.mine sud.
denly shut down, and numerous
men were unceremoniously thrown
out of employment. They declared in
lugubrious tones. that Nevada City’s
racé was run, and that this basin.
would soon become a howlin:z wilderness. That subsequent events did not .
verify the correctness of their predictions seemed in--no-wise.to abash’
them, for when there came a period,
in the career of the Merrifield when .
it grew necessary to quit operations!
there for the time being, the croakers’
again bobbed serenely up with a sar.
donic ‘‘I told you so.””. Whenever be.
fore or since either of these notable
and-not-desirable—incidents— occurred,
five, ten, twenty, fifty or any other!
number of men employed in any of the!
mines have been given a resting spell
long or short for one reason or another, the croakers have at once resumed .
with fresh ardor their dismal dirges.
When the hydraulic mines were clos-.
ed down they then sent up their loudest wails, and declared that the town,
had ‘‘gone up for sure this time.”
In the meantime Nevada
been steadily bettering her condition
in all material respects. Each time .
one resource has weakened in any re-.
spect, a new one has sprung up Phenix-like to take its place, and so it
will continue *“e to the-enil-of time.’
She is thes." of the most productive region 1" all this wonderful .
State. Her gold mines have been developed in but slight degree; and .the .
untold mineral wealth yet undiscov.

try and capital to bring it forth in.
glittering streams. The horticultural .
advantages of her soil and climate are .
past all compare, and yet they have .
been but passingly recognized as yet. .
In fine, everything that nature can .
provide is in her favor, and ensure for .
her a prosperity as stable as the hills}
to which she and her belongings are .
anchored.
