WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAR. 2a. City and County Official Prose igratue. —Much has been said about the effect of the dry winter upon the mining ine “_——tereste in this State;-but no correct idea can “be formed” of the damage-the mines Lave sufferéd for want of water, without a visit to the towns and camps winch depend upop mining entirely for their existence. We have just returned from a visit to Alpha, Omega and. Washington, in the northern part of the ~gounty. Many of the camps slong the rondwhere, a year ngo, thousnnds of dullars were beitig tuken out, re now almost entirely desorted. A large extent of ground knowii to be gond is unworked for want of water, and a still larger range of country is anprospectod. “Alpha, Omega, Gold Hill and Jefferson are now alinost without inhabitants. Washington ie more flourighing than the neighbor»: _ ing towns, from the fact_of its locatign on : 4 in Florida, the opinion ie that our total loss in Killed, wounded and missing, is between ; 200 and 1 Our troops were right in front ohipabed batteries in a piece of wodds and before they were aware of its presence, the-batteries opened a galling fire.. They fell back panic. stricken. The rebel loss is suppused fo be large. Prisoners enptured Beauregard in command. It is confirmed that Kngland. groposed ap. ‘armistice on the basis of the evacuation of Schleswig, excepting Olsen, by the Danes. Ruasia, France and Sweden support the pruposition. Austria sssents.Nofighting of any consequence hae taken place. “A report is in. circulation that two first cliss English houses have suflered by the rebel cruisers, and are about to diapatch one of the fastest steamers afluat in pursuit of the pirates. It 1ssuggested that this ) ey be another rebel dodue <2 CALDERWOOD, of San Viaealiea, brings anit against ex-Supreme Judge Norton, Cope and Crocker, to récover $3,000 damages he stated that the troops were from Charleston, . sustained because said Judges decided-wcase} of _ Ancupisuor Hucnms, dirirg bis term o arehbisbopric, ordained one hundred and two priesté; and consecrated: no ‘léss"thaa six bishops. ian A Fina in Joliet, Winwis, tave dhotrseree f to furnish one thousand cavalry horses at one bundred and twenty dollars each. Lewis Gaylurd Clark, one of the finest and ost genial writers of this country resumes his.old place at the. “Editor's Tuble” of the Kuicherbocker Magazine. 4 THE celebrated English horse-tamer and breaker, Mise Reynolds, has recovered two hundred and. filty dulars from the Earl of Dadley, for breaking in winced his unruly steeds. PontivicaL Mass, for the repose of the souls of those who perished in the conflagrae tion of the church of: Santiago, will be pers formed to-day at St. Mary's Church, San Francisco. SS A =e ‘DEATH. In this city, yesterday. FLORENCE, daughter the Yuba river where there are some goud diggings. Many of the miners, svtisfied that there willbe no water this season, have “struck their tents” and started for the enstern slape of the Sierras. Others anxiously look forward to the time when they shali have plenty of water, confident of an ample geturn for their labor from their own hills. Many of the miners at Washington and Omega are now directing. their energies to the development of the Quartz leads that abound in those localities. At Gaston Ridge arich lead has been struck and a mill is&oon to be erected. Near the Tecumseh will, half a dozen new ledges have been recently found, which give. proinise of exceeding richness. This mill, we were informed by the superintendent, gummences crushing borday. The rock is taken from the Fidelity ledge-on the opposite side of the river and run over to the mill on atrack built across the river.— Tey have about-Afty tune of rock already: . atthe mill. The S.vfurd ledge, near the Fidelity, is anew one juat opened, and is said to be very rich: Itis nearly eight feet . thick, and belongs to the Star company. At Diamond Creek, above Omega, another ledge has been discovered. Some of the rock from this ledge bas been crushed in this city and yielded $51 to the ton. A mill, we are informed, is soon to be erected near this ledge. } In this section of the county very little prospesting for quartz has been done until reéently. There are hundreds of ledges pierc« ing the hills in every direction. Many of those discovered, prospect well. The gold that is found in the rivers and ravines is often encased in quartz, and gives evidence of having but recently formed a part ef some ledge. We have no doubt that at mo distant day some of the richest quartz ledges in the State will be found in that part of the county.
