The rebel journals, which have been. our chief source of information, have been prohibited from publishing anything concerning army movements. By late disleaving the defenses of Richmond, has gone to conduct operations against Sherman.— The evacuation of Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington, and other places, has freed:a large force of rebels and it may be that the rebel chieftain can collect forces enough to give battle to Sherman. The activity which . prevailed, at last advices, in front of Petersburg, show that the rebels. are contracting their lines’of defense around Richmond. It is not probable that Grant will permit any force toleave Righmond, ard even should they succeed in getting out to the west and ‘over the North Carolina liné, they would soon find Grant’s veterans in their rear.— We do not think it possible that Lee can do relieved from tite places evacuated, to oppose Sherman's march. The Union army, after leaving a sufficient force behind to hold the places recently captured, will still be largely increased. As there is no large force of rebela south of Sherman a great part of the force required to conduct operations against Wilmington and Charleston will be unnecessary to the defense of those places. In addition to this, reinforeements under Gillemare.on the road to join Sherman, so that thé rebel General. cannot ‘intany case get together men enough to overwhelm Sherman’s army. Cut off from provisions and powder mills, Sherman will easily sweep this force from his front, and then closing in upon Lynchburg and Petersburg-from the'west and south-west, the rebel army will be cut off from all sources of sup@ly and crushed.
