‘ _» THE KMPEROR PAUL. . ~
Curicus Freaks of the Mighty Czar,
£. Whose Subjects Had Good Causo To
Be Afraid of Hiz.
This neat paragraph concerning the
Emperor Paul of Russia appeared in the
recently published Memoirs of Prince
Adam Czartoryski.
“If a poor man, with an old round hat
on his head, showed himself in the crowd
which witnessed the parades, an aide-decamp immediately pursued the culprit,
who fled to avoid being bastinadoed at the
first guard house. The chase was often
continued in the streets, to the great
amusement of the people, who hoped the
unhappy man would succced. in making
his escape.
“Lord Whitworth, the British Ambassador, was obliged to have a hat of peculiar
shape made. for him, so as to be able to
walk about in the morning without contravening the Emperor’s orders.
“Paul drove through the town daily in
a sledge or an open carriage, accompanied
by one of his aides-de-camp. When he
met a carriage it stopped, the coachman
and footmen had to take off their caps,
and the persons in the carriage had to
alight and make a profound bow to the
Emperor, who observed whether it was
sufficiently respectful.
“Sometimes women, with their children
trembling with fright; were seen descending into the snow in a hard frost, or into
the mud during a thaw, toaccomplish this
salutation, Paul always thought that
people wished to slight him as they did
when he was Grand Duke; he liked everywhere to meet with marks of fear and
submission. When people went out into
the streets in carriages or on foot, all took
care to avoid meeting their imperial master; they fled at his approach and went
down a side street or hid under a gateway,” :
Just a Trifle Too Shrewd. .
The inaptitude of the female mind (in
rare instances we mean) to take a comprehensive view of a business transaction
is marvellous, :
At a dry-goods store in this city a woman recently called forsome sort of trimming, which we will not attempt to describe because we could not. She was
told that the piece, containing ten yards,
would cost her thirty cents,
Then a conversation something like the
following ensued
Customer—“O, I doh’t want a whole
piece. How much is it by the yard?’
Saleswoman—‘We have to charge five
cents a yard when we cut it.”
C.—'‘Five cents? Well, I guess seven
yards will be enongh.” (Here the stuif
is measured.)
8.—' Thirty-five cents, please.’’
C.—“How much is there left?”
8.—‘'Three yards,’’
C. (presuinably mentally reckoning that
ten times fiveare fifty)—‘‘How much for
the whole ten yards?” — ae
S. (demurely, but with an eye to busiines)—‘‘O;, you can have the ten yards for
forty-five cents.”
C.—‘Very well, I: guess I'll take ten
yards.” (Planks down forty-five cents
‘and departs.)—Newburyport Herald.
Sponge Baths,
A fat-looking, baldheaded, lobster-colored German in shirt-sleeves appeared in
the hallway of a Chicago bathing establishment, addressing a loose-jointed individual with wet, stringy hair. ”
“Holt on von minud,”’ called out the
first described; ‘“‘you can no go oud dese
blace so you not bay me fur dot bat.”
“Pay for that bath?” exclaimed the other
in apparent astonishment; ‘who said anything about payin’ ?”’
“Tsay somedings bout dot.”
“You do?”
“Yaw, lsay you must bay me fur dot
bat.” “Ub
“You said it wouldn’t cost nothing,”
said the wet-haired man,
“Noddings!’’ echoed the bath-keeper,
“T no say such a dings!”
“What's that readin’ on your sign,
then ?” inquired the disputant._“Dot sign reats; ‘Turkish bats, sulphur
bats, vapor bats and sponge bats,’’’ replied
the manof the lebster complexion.
‘*Welj,’’ said the other, as he edged
away, ‘that last’s it; bein’s I didn't have
apy money, I took a sponge bath!”
The Teuton fell to studying bis sign,
while-his patron méandered towards the
City Hall, but when at last.he looked up
he had resolved to strike ‘‘sponge baths’’
off his list.
Successful Women’s Enterprise,
The fact that women who can do one
thing well find self-support possible is
wellillustrated by the success of @ sandal company at Grand Rapids, Mich. This
establishment is owned and controlled entirely by women. ‘
It started operations a few years ago
with » capital of less than $2,000. To-day
it imports its chamois skins direct from
Italy, and the silk used in making them
into sandals for children’s wear is purchased directly from the manufacturers,
The institution gives employment to
hundreds of needy women at remunverative prices, and refuses to allow machinery tobe used. The last report shows a
net profit on capital invested of over three
hundred per cent.

At a recent wedding in Boston, a young
authoress who is still old enough to be
married, in response to soine playful
taunt, turned to the little eight-year-old
son of a friend standing near:
“Franz, dear,” said the lady, “won’t
you marry me? Do say you'll have me
and I'll write you a book every year.”’
To everybody's surprise the little fellow
considered a moment, and then replied:

In the realm of diseasé the facts of im

avcumulating. Hero, alas, they become ter

nature is more pregnant with awful meaning than the fact of the inheritance of
disease, It meets the physiclan on his daily
rounds, paralyzing his art and filling him
with dismay. The legend of the ancient
-@reeks pictures the Furies as pursuing
famili from ¢ 4 to © ation,
rendering them desolate, The Furies still
ply their work of terror and death, but they
are not now clothed tu the garb of superstition, but appear in the more intelligible but
no less awful form of hereditary disease.
Modorn science, which has Muminated so
many dark corners of nature, has shed @
new light on the ominous words -of the
Scriptures, “The sins of the fathers shall he’

Mable to be inherited, The important and

facts—affecting so powerfully the happiness
