The Story of an Amiable but Stubborn Krish Setter—Victory at Last. should serve as a text in*a reformatory school, or, to bring it nearer home, to some people as an argument in favor of educational discipline. The hero of this tale is an lristi setter, amiable enough; but stubborn, and-trained-only to be good.-He hever showed any special talent, save to “keep house"’ and live up to his canine instincts of barking at seedy looking strangers and evincing a proper affection for the family whom he honored with his maintenance. Not very long since a young relative of this family undertook to teach Jack a trick. Ho was told the dog was too stubborn to learn anything, it was useless wasting tinte over him; but the more objection thrown in his way the more the! young man persisted, for he said it was time Jack knew something, and he ing tricks which Jack must and should acguire forthwith. Whereupon he called Jack into the dining roqgm, shut the door and began his task of making the creature sit up and give his paw. In itself nothing could. be more simple. It is the very kindergarten of ‘canine cul ture, but Jack didn’t see it in that light. He would not sit up. nor, would he give Over and over again, with the greatest patience, was the instruction given, while Jacky in the most idiotic way, refused to hear what was told him. After two hours’ labor the poor dog's kind mistress begged that he might. be cxcused, ‘‘No!'’ was. the stern answer, ‘T've begun and must go on now or ‘the dog will be ruined.’’ Vinally, owing to the lateness of the hour, the disciplinarian led-dack-into-the--cellar;-where-the-household would not be dist urbed, and then renewed the contest with a little more severity. As the clock struck 12 the brute seemed to get it through his pate that unless he obeyed like a gentleman he would have to stay there all night. So he sat up and flopped a tawny paw just once! —‘This-was—enough, the fight was over and the victor rushed away to take the last car home, Jack never told any one of that night's experienco; perhaps no one thought to ask him about it, or if he would kindly exercise his dearly acquired ac oomplitie ments. At all events, weeks passed away ere his new master and conqueror came again to the house. One night Jack heard the voice at the front door, and with the impetuosity peculiar to his race he threw himself headlong against the visitor, and then, suddenly withdrawing, sat down on his haunches and held up a paw. The victory had been complete, and Jack had remembered. his lessou.—DBoston Herald. Specimen Gamblers at Monaco. There was, us an attache later informed me, an unexceptionable assemblage of players at our table-that evening. Opposite to where I sat was a cadaverous looktng old woman whose selfish greed caused her eagerly to clutch at the stakes) whenever she was fortunate enough to win. The revolting expression of her face, if at that moment caught and faithfully transferred to canvas by a painter, would ren der the latter immortal, One individual present appeared to attract more than ordinary attention. 'T'all, well proportioned and with a frank, open countenance, he seemed to have entered the game with the sole purpose of winning the entire capital held by thecroupier. The latter regarded him with evident uneasiness as he coolly proceeded to double all bets and invariably win, At léngth he staked 2,000 francs on the turn, and with a cynical smile arose, having performed what is regarded as the extraordinary feat of breaking the bank, after which all play was suspended at that particular table. Gamblers are, perhaps, the most superstitious of any other class of people, none being more so than the roulette dealers at Monte Carlo. Hence it invariably follows that whenever the bank is broken the play of the unlucky dealer ceases until the following day, under the belief that the fortune of both parties will meanwhile change.—Cor, Boston Commercial bBulleA Grent Secret Revealed. Since Miss Eastlake made her first ap pearance in this country, in her soft, clinging garments, swaying in harmony with every step of the wearer, producing a most graceful and picturesque effect, s0 ciety-has been on the qui vive to discover the secret, and gain, if possible, a tithe at least of the swish and sway and rhythmic movement which seemed to make the gar< ment worn by Hele instinct with life and motion, and part and-parcel of her individuality. ‘he secret has been discovered, and the reigning belles in _tip_top circles in New York are waltzing in liélle dresses, and seem more captivating than over “Hefore. These picturesque gowns are made of some soft, clinging material, and worn over divided skirts, i. @., a seamed petticoat, which by this means is divided to the knee line; making the dress necessarily conform to the gait of the wearer. The secret is said to have been discovered--by the costumer of Rosina Vokes and imarted to a select few of his customers.— St. Louis Spectator. ‘ Superstitions Concerning Toothache. In some parts of Sussex, England, there is a superstition that if you put on your right stocking, right shoe and right trouser leg before the left you will never have toothache. To drink out of a skull taken from a graveyard, to take a tooth from such a skull and wear it round the neck, to apply the tooth to your own living but aching tooth, to put a double nut into your pocket, to pare your finger nails and toe nails and wrap the parings in a paper —all are charms against the toothache, In other parts of England there is a custom of calling the toothache the ‘love pain,” for which the sufferer is not entitled to any commiseration. or she fully consents to this may, perhaps, be doubted.—Iron Times. Why He Gave Music Lessons. Professor Zweibeer is a rather dissipated interest in the old man, took him aside and said to him: “‘Professor;if you were to quit drinking ani keep sober you would be engaged to give lessons in some-of the first familes in Austin and make a great deal of money.”’ “Dot ish all humbug,’ said the old man indignantly. ‘I give lessons so I can get drunk, and now you vants me to sober so I can give lessons. Dot_ ish all humbug.’’—Texas Siftings. ( Would be Useful. A cable dispatch says that a volcano in Russia has begun to throw mud.
