LOCAL MATTBRS.
THe Lost Hitt “Cuatms. —Williamson
& Co., owners of the Lost Hill claims, are
now at work “piping” in the cut to the left
of their claims, and are also running a fiume
up to the right.. A large amount of money
has been expended upou the diggings by the .
present awtiors; and ib. will yet be some time
before they arehotoughly opened and ean
be worked to Vantage. They have laid
over four thousand feet of heavy. iron pipe
for conveying water to their claims; their
fumes Will be about fiftecn hundred feet long
when completed, and a large amount of surface dirt and rock bad to be removed before
any work could be done. In order to realize the immense amount of work: done ‘by
this company since they became owners of
the claims, it would ‘be necessary to go over .
the ground. ‘The “sluices” are being put
down quite rapidly and in a month or so
they will be able to run in two partsof the
claims at the same time. They own about
be able-to take a furmue ouvot it.
THE -PENNSYLVANIA _COMPANY.—The
Pennsylvania Company, whose claims are
located a short. distance the other side of
Cayoteville; a “clear up” from their
first crushing on Saturday last, and considering this is the first “rua” of the mill they
did remarkably well. As all parts ofthe maebinery was new, a considerable quanity of
gold was necessarily lust: This is always the
case at the first crushing in «% new wmill.—
The amount of rock crushed was-about 70
tons, and it paid thirty dollavs to the ton.—
They have'now a ledge three feet in thickness, and a large amount of rock out. The
mill works four stamps at present, and there
is every prospect that it will be kept
running without pulertuyben for some time
te come.
Busivess CHANGE.—By an announcement‘in to-day’s paper it will be seen that
W. H. Crawford has combined with Leavitt
& Hamilton, and that hereafter these gentlemen will be engaged in the Groce
Hardware business. They have sce, hed
in the Kidd & Kuox block—one fronting oi
Pine street and the otler, the old stand of
Leavitt & Hamilton on Bread street The
new. firm will be Crawford, Leavitt & Co .
Allthe members are experienced business
men and are well and favorably known io
this county. They will doubtless command
& goodshare of the trade.
Ee
A Grey Fox.—A large grey fox was
caught ina box-trap, a few nights since, at
Quaker Hill, in this county. He was brought
te town yesterday, and, we understand that a
