3 ae teenbioeeale Moynihan, erat in his place and proddclig # certificate of stock, said there had been bribery and corraption “abed to secure the passage. of the bill, and that stock had eet presénted to him as a consideration for his vote. The announcement created gueh an excitement among the "members that it could only be answerod bya conciousness of its truth, and the 6 tee, ag at first constituted, had & majority of the friends of the swindie. The chairman was changed and Rockwell ousted, but the result of the labors of that committee indicates that.the investigation was not improved. esl change, and: the Assembly came out “pure and undefiled.” Moynihan testified that the certificate was given to him by a man named Morton. He don't ktow whointroduced Morton, can’t describe him and don’t know where he is. The public can take just as mach of this for truth as is desired, andthe “committee declares that “after a diligent search nothing has been heard of the name’of Mortoy in Sacramento since the Legislature met.” _ “Phere is, however ne fact which stands out, showingthat ‘the committée ‘did “not appear over anxious. to, secure teattimony. Tom Greene . sublished a mr card . in the MMa"yiting -his-address and declaring that le knew something about! the. matter, and weald testify df the committee subpoened him. "Mandal 17, 1870. Editor Nevada Transcript ¢ As 1 cannot have the privilege of “dropping in” on you asof yore, I thought I would drop youa line jast for sake of “Auld Lang Syne,” as a word from this remote region may interest you and alse my. old friends é6f Nevada. @ar exile to these.lower regions was very: onex pected and a great trial, but all things’ work for good sometimes. This is the city of “great expectations,” built up through the successful blowing of a few shrewd land owners, and thsprospect that here would be the terminus of the __Southern Pacific Railroad and a great commercial city. Its growth has been wosderfal ; seven hundzed houses and . about'two thousand people in one year.. The rush of immigration and building last Fall-beat anything I ever saw. But for the last two months the reaction has been alarming, even threatening a speedy, and.complete collapse. The — in paste ‘nd business rushed resources of supit ra ano, cal reonrone . caute ‘of this Feaction is the severe-and wtéontinued drought. Somehow while . . here) ‘has beds ébubderit tain ‘in otlier ec but mists and ‘showérs, in all dees than one inch of rain, and on this 17th;.of March, the streams are all dry sand, and this whole region barren, dry and dusty as in Au: gust. Scarce a green _ thing isto’ be seen. Extensive arrangements were made in the Fall for farming. In afew places they were able to plow and sow, bat the grain is burning up, and the present prospect is. an entire failure of crops in this county. On a few ranches twenty or thirty miles away towards the mountains something may be faised, if. there should be Spring rains. This is very hard on many poor families who came here nai ime f on dal ad for their living. — This ambitious city and community are passing through & sore ordeal. But of late hope has revived. When the collapse came, many, instead of taking the steamer as hundreds did, to return up country, went to the mines to prospect. Abéat two weeks ago some Very Tich quartz was brought to'town, nearly a thousand pounds. It. was astonishingly rich ; I never saw anything like it around Nevada or Grass Valley. I could stand off five steps from the. win-. dow where it was exhibited and see . the gold. Of course there was an ex-citement,..Men’s. eyes fairly. bunged . ont with weader. Then such arash: ‘Wagons, carts, horses, mules, donkeys, blankets, bacon, crackers, cheese, picks, shovels and whisky’ were gobbléd up “promiscuously, and the town was deserted. The rock has been sent to San Francisco, and by the last steamer came -mae.thoinvestige-. -tie advance: “guard; 150-strong-of the} army of prospectors. So we have the prospect of a No. 1 mining excitement. What the end will be wWho'can tell? Bat whatof the mines? Well, I really know nothing. Daily ramors come in of other rich strikes, but whether reliable ar not is the question. Like all other mining excitements the epidemic must ran its course. It may amount to nothing. The mines may prove extensive and rich. A few may be made richer, many still poorer. It may be the means of reviving the enterprise and of building up this place, Business is reviving, and there is considerable activity in real estate and building. If any of the folks about Nevada get the fever, I would advise them to keep cool and'stay where they ar for . awhile at least. As to the fature of San Diego, the strong probabilities are that it will soon bea large city. It has the finest site lever saw. Is is situated_on & beautiful bay, with an excellent ‘harbor, and has a mild, equable climate, but its fature must depend upon the prospective coast, and. a. South: era Pacific Railroad ; without thesevit will never'be much. I have but little faith as yet in its agricultural.or mineral resources. ‘The population, as a whole is made up of a Very excellent class of people; liberal minded, generous, intelligent, enterprisiag, and waintaining a high standard of social aid moral worth, a8 muchso as any community’ I Wave been in. They have . pee ind. to us and. liberal.tothe good cause. We. had to beia here with nothing. * They have built a church-and a parsonage about like that in. Nevada,-and have nearly . paid for them. On closing, Mr. Cross gave way to J. lL. Caldwell, who being limited te six minutes, did not enter upon the merits of the question. A’ motion was made to renew the discussion at some future time, which after some lively sparring orf parliamentary rales was voted down. The question was decided in the affirmative.
