PURSDAY, MARCH 26,'1867.
ConsERyATISM.—Conservatism is the
4mplacable foe of progress in every department of life, It clings tenaciously to
“old forms, creeds and practices, resisting
‘alt progressive movements. . Conservatism
is more apt tocling to theevils in any system-than to the good, for the progressive’
spirit of the world extracts the good >of
-old-creeds and practices, and discards the
evil, leaving conservatism no basis save
-evil to-rest apon.-In-the history.of the
church, conservatism held to the forms of
4he old dispensation, while Christianity,
with the true spirit of progress, took what
_“$as good of the old, and built up a new
and a better system. Conservatism in
cour own history attempted to rear a bulwark around the English throne, and
though the good of the English constitution was all lost, it tried to bind the Colonies with galling chains of despotism.—
The progréssive spirit dashed down the
bnlwarks reared around oppression, and
adopting the good of the English constitution, built up a republic founded upon the
everlasting principles of liberty. Time
#olled on, until slavery, an evil left by
framers of the constitution, begun to endanger the country, and immediately con-gervatism assumed & position in defence of
that institution. The same spirit led rebele to take-up arms in defence of an evil which had grown up in defiance of our,
_eonatitution_and the genius of our government. Conservat-sm in the South was
treason in the North—it was copperheadsm. Anthony,in speaking of Caesar's
death, is made by Shakspedrg to say:
“The evil that men do lives after them ;!
The good is oft interred with their bones.”
The same may be said of parties, and it
seemis that conservatism has an espécial
mission to perform, in preserving the evils.
What little there was of good in ancient
democracy is buried with it or incorporated into radicalism, and the conservatives
of the country are endeavoring to perpetuate the evil, Tho conservatives, under
the lead of Andrew Johnson, are endeavoring now to preserve tho treasonable spirit
of the South and to build up governments
in antagonism to universal liberty. In
this, as well as in every other contest,
conservatism must fail. The radical spirit
of progress in the country is as the course
ofa mighty river. The conservatives may
baild their little “wing-dams,” or attempt
to stay the tide, but the great river will
flow on, wideniiig and deepening its chan_nél.on aecount of its accumulated strength,

on the occasion ‘of an entertainment’ not
half'so good ; but it makes some difference whether the perfornters are from
berg and Edmonds, on Saturday night,
was exquisite, and was highly appreciated
by the audience. Edmonds’ solo on the }
violin was brilligntly executed. .He possesses an almost. magic power with his
violin. .As soon as he strikes a note, all
confusion in the audience is hushed and
music. “The pathetic passages are executed with a feeling that seems to pervade
every listener and theeffect is written upon every countenance. As soon as the
‘performer strikes upon the jig every eye
begins to sparkle and involuntarily the feet
begin.to move in time to the music. We
have heard many performers of _ greater
celebrity than Edmonds, but we have
never seen any that could so control an
audience with a violin. Bill Davidson appeared asthe charmer of “snaix,” and
handled a huge “sarpent” like one of that
genius. He also appeared in his speciality, the “Empressanio,”The Willis boys
danced and sang first rate. “They possess
considerable talent and would add to any
entertainment. Jimmy Wilson danced a
jig and sang a song in good style. Mr.
Matheny sang “Hard Up” with good effect. The music of the orchestra, composed of Edmonds; Chase, English, Lampe
and Carter was firstrate. The entire per
formance was excellent, and we are sorry
that there was not a larger audience to appreciate it.
A Rute WitHovut aN ExcEPptTion.—
Make it aruleof life never to be absent
from your wife, whefi consistent with your
duty asa man and a citizen it is possible
for-you to be present and never go out for
what the world calls pleasure without her.
This isasound rule and just one. You
ought to have everything in common to
share each other’s sorrows and joys; and
how a man who really loves his wife can
go out and find entertainment night after
night I am ata loss to conceive. No man
has aright to be absent from his wife beyond what is necessary. You may say,
“May I join a rifle corps?” “O, yes by all
means if you have time but come home
directly after the exercise is over.” ‘May
I not go out with this friend or that friend
orto this or that party ?’’ I say, “No, not
without your wife,”
On_one_ occasion during the attack at
Donelson, a Southern. hardshell exhorter
was holding forth in exalted strains, declaring repeatedly that.the Lord fought on the
side of the South, and Jehovah was encamped round about the Confederate Army
saying thatit was impossible for the feel
ing Yankees to conquer them.Just.atthe
close of one of these sentences, a man dash
ed. up to the church door on horseback,
and yelled out : “The Yankees have captured Fort Donelson and are coming up the
river !’ ‘Then my brethering, observed the
startled preacher, ‘save yourselves, for the
Lord has got licked.”
