They are not seeders from Charlestot, of men who took part in that disgraceful wrangle that result: ed. in the defeat of both Douglas and Breckinridge; but they are men who acquiesce in the decisiona of the majority. If the past be any criterion, the other faction of the party “may not be of so reliable a nature. If incompatibility of temper be cause fot feuds in the party, we may expect that Thompson Campbell and Major Bidwell, as welt as some otherd, lately elected to go to Baltimore, will not be the most harmantous beings in the world unless circumstances wiost signal. ly-fayor. . . But the pastia bothing. We.care not for the past; The future is what concotne us. The men who have been se: ~~~ ee ted are safe no doubt for Uncle Abe and fT thatis the main thing after all; but generally apeaking they are not men of much talent or mark, and not likely to shine in a representative body like that which is to assemble at Baltimore. . Thompson Campbell is not a sober man by-« long shot, yet he aspires to the highest positions, and a faction of the party backs bis ambition, with the disgraceful ex~ ample of McDougal staring them in tie face, It is the same coterie too that forced the drunken McDougal upon the State. On the whole, it.is, perhaps, best that the “bhoys” are eo near sticcessful in their machinations. The condition of the country is each that no patriot will tura schismatie-— The bulk of the Union party cannot affurd to be disorganizers. Some vile whelps -will contipve to snarl and snap at the old leaders that labored to get the door open for the admission of unworthy members of the new organization und succeeded; but meanness and ingratitude are the prime qualities of some, aud. hawks, for principle’s sake, have been jadmitted to the company of cleaner bide many times before in the history of the . world. These foul birds may pierce the air with their ecreeches to the disgust of all hon, orabié then. They may cry out abvut othere trying to weaken the Uniow party ; but sensible men Will aee that they are the di tractiqniate and net those who are sacioall ers and persons engaged in almest all kinds a Youne GAMBLER —The Eameralda Union tells of teeing a youthful specimen of humanity—perhaps six years old—sitting flat apen the ground, dealing inonte, and , surrounded were buck. ing at the game. And thus the advantages of the rail+ road are but beyinning to be realized to this magnificent valley. The money princes of San Franciseo are straggling along the lme of the road, selecting’ choice locations on which to erect villas ior retirement. Many of these country retreats were seen dodging about among the trees as we passed, perjoyment. ‘The time will come when rural retreats for San Franciscans will line the road, fot the sites are numerous and the inducements many.
