vB My Bie : z : E * ra 3 CSR BRIE in Ry oes TREC nara Aaa : : oe gene lin — enfoobled by disease and eetornetenenante G Sravssigt a ~ CALIFORNIA. . OOUNTY & CITY OF FICIAL PRESS. FRIDAY, MARCH 29,1867. “AK Minto Bureav.—The Commissionerof Revenue estimates that there are : 158,157 persons engaged:in mining. Full istatistics would probably show a third] ‘more than this. J adging a ‘the popState, it is ne to estimate ‘that there are from five to six persons dependent directly ‘upon every miner, and when we come to look at the large number of towns, cities . and industries sustained by this great im terest, its importance is apparent. The ‘mining interest, though extended, is not so general as the mechanical, commercial ‘and agricultural industries of the country. Each of these departments are represented‘in Congress by men of ability, thoroughly conversant with their necessities, and no question can arise in regard to them that is not thoroughly understood. Not so with mining—and_ especially -with gold “the first rich mines-of gold were discover-, ed, and the Jaws governing the deposit . . and yield, the manner of working, and the necessities of the large class of people dependent upon the minesare,as yet, little understood. “The other great industries of the country have their departments at Washington, from which monthly or an. nual reports are issued, setting forth their needs and tepresenting their successes.— The Department of Agriculture in the ‘monthly and annual reports issued, furnishes a fund of information and instriction to farmers, graziers and horticulturaljats, that is of inestimable value, besides biving such data to legislators as enables ‘them to act intelligently for the general interest. The greatest ignorance of the extent and wants of the mining interest has prevailed at Washington, and California has been unfortunate in never hav” ‘ing hada representative who could dispel it, Cole, it is true, proposed a Mining Bureau, but it was defeated, and Conness has worked steadily against it. “Nearly every journal in the mining Jocalities has favored the project, because they believe the dame good effects which resulted from the establishment of a Bureau of Agrisulture, will follow to the mining interest* The appointment of a Commissioner such ‘a8 Ross Browne, who writes his reports without looking at the mines, will do about ‘as much good as would a letter from “Josh Billings” on Astronomy,.so far as any prac. tical information is concerned. His accounts of the mines at Washoe and Reese River, are considered by all miners of those . localities as huge burlesques. Let a Mining Bureau be established and placed in charge of competent men and a great good will be done for the development of the mineral wealth of the country. THE SACRAMENTO BEE. —This onceiteals evening papér proposes, on the first of May, in addition to the daily; to issue a semi-weekly edition. The Bee always contains a large amount of excellent read. ing matter for the family circle, its selections being made with great taste and its stories being of the most interesting character. In its columns is never found that trashy stuff so extensively published by Journals which claim a reputation as literary papers. We predict that the semiweekly Bee will become very popular, A Curious, RuMor.—The Denver News Bays that there is a curious rumor ftom the mountains, by a gentleman just down, ‘that a remarkable pocket or cavit has ‘been found in one of the mines near, Gregory Point, the walls of which are absolutely lined or plated with gold. Its inform. “ght had seen a small specimen from it, ‘which was valued at $200. ACCIDENTS.— We learn from the Grass Valley Union that Wm. John Loudill, a wood-chopper, had his arm broken by a limb of a tree which fell upon it. —— Mrs. Cuppy, said to be the most eloquent advocate of Spiritualism in the United States, will shortly visit this county.
