NEVADA one CALIPORNIA, © fn sane = senor é ‘FURSDAY MOBNING, MARCH 3. “ Tas Wons or RECONSTRUCTION. — Phe events of the past few days have given the work of reconstruction _ upon the Congressional plai a new Btart and—the Radical party has now more friends among the people than at anytime since Johnsen became Presi, gress and the determined opposition of . the President until he found Congress -‘wasin earnest, served to make them friends of loyalty. The President’s sneaking message,in which he attempts . te crawl ont of the difficulty in which he had placed himself, shook the con-____ fidence of his admirers, and he now ocgupies the position of a man fearing the consequences of his own work, ae It is very probable that he will here_ _ after cease to be an obstacle in the way of the unity and harmony of the country, andthe unreconstructed rebels, _ finding themselves deserted by the President will quietly submit to the plan of Congress and help forward the work in their section, Had it not been for the course of Johnson, undoubtedly every rebel State would have been represented in Con' gress before this time. He has nourished the rebellion and attempted to keep _. .plive the jealousies that existed, de-~siring to ride upon the curent into popularity. He has failed in this, and his failure is the triumph of liberty and the right. He has served his purpose. The loyal men after the fall of Rich~ mond fancied the country saved and "took it for granted there would be no imore trouble. The fact that Johnson would have plunged the country in war if he could have secured the co-operation of the army or.any part of it, has unearthed his design and opened the eyes of loyal men so that they fully somprehend the crisis through which the country is passing. The way is now open to complete triumph, and if __. Joyal men are true to themselves, free Republican government will pierced in the approaching contest. THE IurEAGHMENT.—The House Committee have reported ten articles of impeachment. In addition to the points already given, they charge the President with tampering with a General of Department to induce him to _._ treat. a law of Congress. as unconstitutional and to use force in violation of said laws. ‘The Committee reserves the right te present other articles.— The House was to vote upon the resolutions yesterday. A committee of the best lawyers in the House has been ap~ pointed to conduct the case in the Senate, as follows: Thad, Stevens, Butler, ‘Bingham, Williams of Pennsylvania, Wilson of Iowa, Boutwell and General Logan. Dinty Wor«.—The Democratic members defeated a vote on the resolutions indorsing Congress, by leaving the Senate without a quorum er refusing to vote, after a windy speech . against time by Johnson. Their friends ag) Brownlow brought them to time. The Senators who engaged in the dirty work on Saturday are a part of the material which disgrace. our legislative assen— THE cup and chest of.Alexander Selkirk, the world~famed Robinson Crusoe of Defoe, has now become the property of Mr. James Hutchison, of the Seotch Warehouse, 48 Warwick street, London. These interesting relics have up to this time remained in the possession of Selkirk’s descendants at Lado, Fife, where he was.born, The cup was put upon a stale and mounted with -silver “hy Sir Walter: Scott; it is made out of cocoanut, and rudely carved. The chest is ‘very heavy and ts” very ‘curiously EG TS : ‘Tie children of Mr. Hall-ofPotten, near the Vermént and Canada line, are five in number, and all have six fingers foot. . The two pomsgett: are, twins, : The Daily Transcript, i a eaceask Gledtee urns gs game, bat . ] upon each hand and six toes upon each office passed off ‘smoothly yesterday, and the novitiates will be fully installed in a day or two, The retiring officers have performed their daties well as a general thing, and the new ones come with the confidence of the people, as expressed in their election. All the bonds were filed and accepted by the proper authority, with the exception of Public Ad ministrator. : Wood's friends have urged’ him, and that he has determined to qualify for the office. oe In Prospect.—In addition to the announcement of coming amusements, which we have copied, in another place, from the TRANSCRIPT, says the Grass Valley. Union, we'hearthat Miss Emilie Melville will make the tour cf the inte‘rior of the State, taking Grass Valley and Nevada in her way. She is said to be the most finished artiste, in the line of characters she performs, who has yet made her appearance in California. As 2 vocalist she has won plaudits from the San Franciscans and the most unstinted praise from the press of that city. SuPrERvisors.—The Board of. Supervisors were yesterday engaged in examining the report of District Attorney Caldwell upon Delinquent Taxes. As the report includes the-business of the entire term it requires some time to go through with it. So far as examined it was found correct, and it proves ‘that this branch of business, so often neg>{ lected, was well performed by the outgoing officer. ae Store RosBpepD.—On Saturday night the store of Wm. Wolf, on Main street, was entered, and the money. drawer, containing about $12 in coin, was carried off. Mr. Wolf locked up his shop and left the gas burning low while he went across the street to get shaved.— He was absent only twenty minutes, during which time the robbery was committed. The rogue was evidently well posted about the premises. THe AmMounT.—Each new officer yesterday subscribed five dollars for the Nevada Benevolent Society, making in all $75. een THe river Seine is frozen over at Paris and is covered with skaters, among whom Miss Beckwith, an Ameri. can lady, .attracts immense attention by the agility and grace with which she executes letters on the ice with her skates. Cardinal Antonelli expressed his appreciation of this teuder of support, but. said the Pontifical Government could not accept it at the present moment. Heap Center Stevens is still in Paris, and the fact is well known. He does not attempt to conceal his residence, which is a small lodging in the Boalevard St. Michael, but he may be unaware that two English ‘police agents have arrived in Paris-forthe speci purpose of watching his movements.— They do not lose sight of him day or night. THE London Review says that at this time there js no country, no matter how embarrassed or how poor, in which . there is so much pressing and painful poverty, so much misery as in England. -We learn from the Union that Ben; F.
