Daily Transcript: The ride from Santa Clara to this place is a most delightful eleven and reaches Santa Cruz at four Pp. M. The first partof the route, for about twelve miles, is monotonous. The rood is scross a dead level and no variety is presented to the eye except. the frequeat turning at right angles around the’eorners “Of farms, all as flat aa a gvod one ought tobe. ; The scene changes as you approach the Sierra Madre mowntains. New trees and shrube appear. The ascent-is easy and the . views full of agreeable change. You wind along up ravines, enter dark clumps of redwood, then gracefully round a point, see beau tiful vistas through openings in the forest hills, or down steep precipices upon dark streams far below. There is new and then a lumber-burg along the ruad where redwoud for every use ia piled in large quanti‘ped up to the sun, where it is said the finest grapes exhibited at the Santa Clara fairs are produced.. All her aspirations are for the country. Her hopes of the future he in. the glory of the present and future-Union:—A-division of the “wational territory would sap her growth and} prosperity. She cannot be other then true to the great cause of Union and human liberty ifshe would. And while this ie so it is foolishness to say her citizens shall be proscribed as. worse than secessionists, becu use. they claim the rigtit to determine in their own way who may most fitly represent them and their interests in the Legislature of the State or sny other deliberative body. It is true, faction should net be inaugurated in the Union party for tight or trangient causes; but when abuses are otherwise insdperable it is the duty of the people in all odses to right themselves unlese worse evils are sure to result by independent action. We do not countenance balting or pulitical desertion. But the time may come, as it has often come inthe past, when nu other remedy is possible for great wrongs. ‘Yet; tet assay; that while-the condition of the country is as perilous as itis, it shall.not be charged upon us that we seek every cr any opportunity to malign any man who is true to the great. caase We espouse, and who has shown his devotion to the Ucion by his every actand counsel. The disruptionists may be known by their malignity instead of soothing tune téwards members of the party. Thero isa disposition manitested persistent y tu drive men to desperate resorts by constant assaults, It is seen in various phases and places aud is reprehenmble ia the highest degree. The attempt to strike at freedom of pohtical action in San Francisco emanates in the same wilful and perverse spirit. It ia attempted to be sanctified by aloud-mouthed profession of love for the Union, and exalted admiration for Abraham Lincoln. — It is, however, complaiied of on the part of . éome, whether justly or vot, we are not aufficiently versed in the past and present po= litioal etatua of men to say, that too often the charge of faction comes from those who were not formerly friends of the Admin'stration, and is ditected against those who thrust Mr. Lincoln mto public life, and who have stood by him in the thickest of every storm. “when the stoutest hearts beat quick and the boldest held their breath.“ ‘To attempt aforay upon the old bulwarks of a glorious class of the community with one voicedeclare it to be mean a and a nee Tre Ipauo TRADE.—The carr aa apy furmer year iscovered. The old Spanish truil that muleteere followed in days agone in passing te-and from the Missions ol Sinte Claru and Santa Crus, ia still visible in some places, looking like a deep furrow cut in the hard, réeh-like suil of the ridge. It is overgrown in spots with an almost impenetrable iwase of chapparal with which a Htarge portion of the ridge is eotered. Aa. * you descend the mountains on this side, more” and more are seen the signa of extreme fertility and approaching beauties, until a grand. bay bursts into view, friaged with a farming country of exquisite green, and huzy mountains beyond. You dash down through evergreen forests, uctoss clear and bright rivulets, around curves aud into narrow and . long farm-like valleys, all the tine on a fine road flanked with the most charming scenes ry: Birds sit upon old mossy fenees.or in trees and sing se tbey were wont to do in spring-mendows in the days of our boyhood. Their lays are natural idyls, calling up the sweetest charms of country life. We have reached another climate, not dry and feverish asin the interior, but fresh with the aire of the health-giving sea. A mist hangs upon the tops of the hills and drapes the trees half down with a vapory veil: The country spread -out-inevery direction is of fresheat green, for here-the atmosphere is charged with moisture, and the earth bears witness to benignant skies. Santa Cruz ie the loveliest spot on the coast. Ite beautiful scenery, crystal streams, its expansive bay, fertile fields, and climate of eternal spring, to sy nothing of other interests, mark it ae the future Newport of the State, where the heat and dust of summer and the cares of ‘business will be thrown aside fer enjeyment andrecupera~ tions Here flowers bloom all the year.— Here‘are views, aw endless variety, pleasing to the eye. Here is music in the roar of the surf, and health in the breeze. Here is lite without the formalities of cities and hys geine without the aid of doctors. I know of no spot on the coast where one cxn spend a month with more pleasure to himaelf. The pure streams abound in trout. The woods are full of game. The beach in sume places is stocked with mussele and chums, and elsewhere strewn with shells. — There ia bathing in the surf or in the waters of the San Lorenzo, There are drives on tke shore, through romantic glens, or across the uplaud country of farms. There is society in the village or “where none intrudes,” by the sounding ocean. There are walks by beautiful” Bardens, or clamberings through . used wild ‘and wooded scenes fresh from the hands Lat nature, I shall say more of Santa Cruz in my next. Ww. Wm: B.
