Ex-President Johnson is reported as convalescing after extreme suffering from neuralgia and calculus. “THE Leaps or ScrENcE.—Almost every step in engineering and mechanical progress, says the Philadelpia Press, has been marked by some substitution of iron for wood, or some new combina. tion of iron. But one of our most enterprising Eastern railroads has reversed the old ordér of things, and hag gone back to bring up improvements in wood. The iron wheel on an experimental car one substituted. The cost of the new wheel is three times that of the common cast-metal one, but its durability is. es— timated to be eight times as great : that is, it will run a distance’ of. four hun. dred thousand miles, while the metal wheel will only run fifty. thousand. . Fabulous as this may seem, when we consider the elacticity and-toughness of certain kinds of wood, there is no rea. son why when used as car wheels they should not preserve their texture longer than iron, if the:-wearing surface. be properly protected. If the experiment prove a success it will afford a singular illustration of the leaps Science sometimes takes with out having considered well where she would land, CASHMERE GoATs IN SACRAMENTO CountTy.—Lhe Folsom Telegraph says : We were. shown a few days since a piece of wool from. a Cashmere buck . the property of Oakley & Shirland, about one-quarter blood. This wool is worth froma dollar and a half to five dollars, the price depending upon the lengtli of the sta. ple, some of it reaching twenty inches in length. The annual clip is about five pounds to the goat. There isa for. tune in-prospect for enterprises of this kind. FEMALE PRINTERS.—Nearly five years ago, says the Lawrence (Wis.) ‘Enterprise, the printers employed in our office, enlisted and went to the war, leaving the office destitute of help. The editor was not a practical printer, and printers could not be obtained for love ormoney. Forbes, an ex-journalist, is now running a whisky mill at White Pine. Having lost his dog, he sent an adver tisement to the Sacramento Union, together with a ten-dollar greenback, which turned out to be a counterfeit.
