Brily @ A CITY, CALIFORNIA. COUNTY & CITY OF FICIAL PRESS. SUNDAY, MARCH 31, 1867. RoBBERY AND Mtrpver.—On Friday ‘night a party of desperadoes robbed two ‘Chinese cabins about three miles above ‘San Juan, andin one of them murdered vone of the inmates. The following particulars are furnished us by the driver of the ‘San Juan stage: The party, consisting of two Spaniards and one American, first entered a cabin on Missouri Creek, .and demanded money. On the Chinaman refusing, a rope was placed around his neck and he was dragged up over the limb of a tree several times. He then gave the rob~—pérs seventy dollars. From this place the robbers went to Moonshine Creek, a short _ distance off, and after tying the inmates, some seven or eight in number, they went through the house. One of the Chinamen made some resistance and the robbers fired . at him with a pistol. _The shot took effect “tn the abdomen and the victim died in a few moments. The robbers got thirteen dollars in coin and several pairs of blankets at this place. _When our informant left no trace had been discovered of the robbers. One of the Chinamen, who speaks English well, describes the American as being very tall, and the Spaniards as being of medium size. CLostna ExercisEs.—The term of the Forést Springs Public School closed on Friday Jast with an examination, pic-nic and exhibition. This school has been for three years under charge of B. J. Watson, assisted by his wife, during which time it has made rapid progress. The teachers ended their connection with the school on Friday and leave on Monday for a visit to the East. The school loses an excellent ~~.. teacher in Mr..Watson, and the county “One who has done much for the advancement “of. educational interests. The exercises of Friday consisted of an exami~ nation, mus.c by thepupils of Mrs. Watson, and Qoclamatlons. "iG large number of guests present partook ‘Of-an_excel~ lent repast prepared by the leaders of the District, and in the evening the school gave a first rate dramatic entertainment, concluding with a dance that lasted until morning. Mr. Broadbent succeeds as teacher of the school. NINE hundred and eighty-nine love letters were produced in evidence in a late breach of promise case in Liverpool. AccorpIne to M. The Jands of the company are located in Yuba ‘county at Johnson’s Ranch. The Cakfornian has received a prospectus of the com“pany, in which are letters in testimony. of the value of the property from several parties of this county. We know nothing of the minés*or their value, but judge from the prospectus they are “some,” Theifirst part of the prospectus contains-a map of California. Johnson’s Ranch is marked as a large square, while the principal cities are only indicated by.a dot. The railroad from Folsom to Marysville, according to the map, runs within a short distancé of Johnson’s Ranch. A subdivision, of. the map contains a beautiful. plat of the “Lands of the Woodruff Mining Company, containing 2,807 82-100 acres.” Bear riyer is represented large.enough to float the Great Eastern, while a number of squares indicate the. supposed locations of hotels, houses, etc. Thgtitle page says: “Prospectus of the Woodruff Mining Company of Yuba county, California, Incorporated by a Special Charter-from the State of Perinsylvania. About 2,000 of the 2,807 acres contain gold and copper; of the -balance, about 300 acres are rich bottom, and the rest the first quality of grazing land.”— Speaking of the placer diggings, it says: “These diggings, 89 far as ‘prospectéd,’ yielded from two to ten dollars per day to each miner, and that the quartz ledges or lodes are of the same character as those in the Round Tent mining district. ‘Two copper leads run through the property, and there is sufficient timber and wood. Ranch Hotel, stable, and three small dwellings. These buildings are large enough for all the present wants of the company. The canal or ditch belonging to the above property was built at an expense of $56, 000, and conveys water from Wolf Creek. Present capacity of the éanal about one thousand inches.” The balanee of the prospectus describes minutely the “proposed mode of operations,” which are,as soon as the canal is in order, to commence working the placer diggings by the means of selling licenses to Chinamen. It. is intended to license at least one thousand Chinamen as soon as possible, ete. Long letters in “testimony relative to the value of the Woodruff Mining Company's property,” from parties who sign themselves, “Yours very respectfully James D, White, Charles L. DeForest, F. R.
