This popuia-. tion produces over $75,000,000 in staple: articles according to the returns to the Surveyor General,-and these returns ——— imperfect. The State, has ev~ ery variety of soil arid climate and in ___._ every part of the State, from the moun' tain summit.to the ocean, the soil will yield abundantly of . some product.— which the heavier wines can be made, ‘and the mountains for an extent of ___. three~ hundred miles, running north from Mariposa county, will yield grapes from which wines, equal to the—best } "French Clarets can be made. In this industry alone Culifornia has a source of wealth which. should make her first among the agricultural States of .the and the manufacture of silk is another ; ? Gaaawively undeveloped source of wealth. Experiments have demonstrated that the silkworm thrives better ‘and produces more than anywhere else. Both these industries have been tried in Nevada county and great success has ‘been attained. The wines of this lo_ eality have been btought into market, and where care has been taken in their manufacture they are highly esteemed. There are thousands of acres in this county that can be obtained *at low rates, which would produce excellent _ grapes—and this land should ‘be’ plant-_ed. Many papers of the State are calling loudly for immigration, and they seem to hold that all we need is popu* lation: One fourth of the population . we now have are a curse to the State "and live upon the lebor of the remainder, Those who come to this State ee a TRAE EER AT rT _ without ambition except to get large. wages for little work. We do not need suche population. We want farmers who have small means, who are willing to plant and wait. One ship load of Western farmers would domore for the State than ten cargoes of those who come solely for the purpose of working ~~ Jation to plant and reap, and when we . get such, millions of money that now goes from our miners to enrich others will be returned to swell the riches of California. : Tue RAtLRoAD But.—In the Senate, on Saturday, the railroad bill was. * upagain. The amendment providing weight was reconsidered, and beaten. Pratt, of Sierra, then offered an amendment providing that no reduction of freight should be made, until the net . profit of the road is ten per cent. per annum on the money invested. This “was passed and the bill sent to the AsT aabiy. The Assembly refused to con_ our, and the bill went back to the Senate. It is hardly probabl® that any reduction will al made this session. Drep—iast nists, the State nalebac . ~. ture, after having lived to the full limit allowed by law, The people of the ‘State have reason to bless the man the shape of a constitutional amendlimiting the sessions of the Legalate to one hundred and_ twenty ag “eld i Jury at Richmond, has fou er indictment against Jeff. ot eee ioteced as Calif: put on a new line of steamers toe San} sons.engaged in-agricultural products . . ~The valleys will produce grapes from . . Ihave been arraigned before the school committee and accused of smoking pipes in their respective school houses during school hours.’ In the House of Rebweaatien. the bill for the reduction of fares and freights on the several branches of the Pacific railroad has been referred to the Committee on railroads. Mr. Logan has introduced a bill which provides that an internal reve‘nue of 2 per cent,_per annum shall be paid on United States bonds from and after June 1, 1868.
