When the guns were being fired on York street yesterday. in honor of Sargent, the concussion was so great as to shatter numerous panes of glass in the Courthouse, demoralize a whole sash of lights in Bridget McCloskey’s residence, and knock off a big patch of plastering over the Pine street entrance to Morgan & Roberts’ block. Antoine Tam , was the heaviest loser, however, A large sized figure of Captain Jack, made of candy, aud which several years ago won a gold medal at the State Fair, was precipitated from its perch in the show window ofTam’s restaurant. It fell with its case upon the beautiful glass aquarium beneath it, and both the costly ornaments were. shattered to atoms. Damage was also done in severai other places by the breaking of windows and loosening of plastering. Spring Goods Arriving. Was on trial last month, it was remarked upon asa notable crial, and as presenting some very pecu personal features. The case is now being argued before J udge Jackson. Temple in the Supreme Court-room at the Capitol. If the case was of deep interest when the testimony was being taken, it is doubly so now. The scene in the Court yesterday, for instance, was in the highest degree impressive. The Court room. itself _speaks of judicial -solemnity and dignity. On the bench sat a Judge who has graced the Supreme Bench of the State, and whose legal acquirements and scholarly attainments have made him one of the dis. tinguished men of the State, and the high judicial qualities of whose mind have placed him as one of the leaders of the California bar. Beside him, part of the day, by courtesy, sat Judge Sepulveda, of Los Angeles, a man of dignified bearing, fine presence, and who, as a Judge and a lawyer, stands high in the es timation of the people of thesouthern part of the State, he having been but littleas yet in the central and northern sections. Before these Judges, at the bar, were two exChief Justices, another ex-Justice ofthe Supreme Court, the AttorneyGeneral of the State of California, and eight other lawyers of distinguished ability—even the youngest of them evidencing that quality of mind which betokens success at the bar. Among these gentleman are to be found as bright and powerful minds, and as high legal ability, as is.possible to be compassed by any choice_of a like number of lawyers on the Coast ; indeed, it is doubtful ifsuch a bar as that under notice could be repeated on the Pacific by other selection. Addressing the Court all day was one of the most brilliant lawyers and most graceful advoeates of the State, Listéning to him, with rapt attention, was a strong array of his profession ; the Governor of the State, an ex-Governor of the State and ex-United States Senator, two clergymen distinguished for their scholarship and learning, engineers of the most prominent class; leading journalists; State, city and. county officials, and a fair number of thoughtful people representing the country, and the citizens of Sacramento. One of the marked features of the trial is the dignified bearing of all the members of the bar, the impressiveness of the presence of the Court and its manner, the almost courtly courtesy and studied politeness that mark. the conduct of the counsel toward each other—in short, Judge Temple’s Court, just now, approaches very closely, if it does not indeed attain the highest ideal of an American Court, where there is dignity “without. oppressive —_ce#emonial, courtesy and that decorum which is demanded——by—the—most exacting ethics of the bar, without cold reserve or mere formality ; scholarship that seeks not display ; ability most prominent in its modesty ; judicial attention without impatience; the highest manifestations of skill in presentation of argument without vaunting; and throughout and around and over all an atmosphere’ that, while tranquil, impresses. the spectator with the majesty of the law. “Hit” Lansing in Trouble. t The tragedy reported from Eureka, Nevada, wherein C. J. Lansing shot and killed hig wife, is a most lamentable occurrence. Mr. Lansing is a talented lawyer and has’ hitherto been consideréd a gentleman in every sense of that word. He is a pioneer of the Pacific Coast, and during a thirty years residence in California and Nevada has “ever enjoyed the esteem and ,respect ofthe communities in which he has lived. for several years he was engaged inthe practice of law in Grass Valley, ~in this county, and he is weil known all through this section as ‘‘Kit” Lansing. His domestic life has been unhappy for several years, but his friends are shocked and surprised at this tragic outcome. ——————_-2.-3-2—Notes from the ‘‘Union.” Drifting has been commenced in the Pennsylvania mine, which is being developed by the-Menlo Company. = The hoisting works of McGriff & Co., near the lower Colfax road, and in the vicinity of the Bullion tine, are nearly ready to start up. the bottom of the Homeward Bouna 3 s. Trying to Make the Nevada 'City Academy a Permanent iustitu: tion. Nevada City has long felt the need ofa permanent’ and first-class educational institution, of a private character, where at a reasonable tuition the youth of the county may acquire a knowledge of those branches of study that are requisite to the professional and business walks of life. This want now seems likely to be supplied. M, B. B. Potter, a well-known and eminently successful educator, who. has long resided here, and has at present a private of all ages, has been offered material assistance if he will proceed to or‘ganize such an institution as is outlined above. In case the disposition tohelp is found to exist generally among our citizens, an incorporation will be formed under the name of the Nevada City Academy Association, A desirable site for the school can be obtained, the lot of W. C. Groves, on Pine street opposite Captain Rapp’s residence, being offered on very liberal terms, Here would be erected, as a starter, a two story building say 30 by 40 feet in dimenSions, This would give a series of spacious study and recitation rooms, besides, should such be desired, some sleeping apartments for pupils from abroad. The size of the building could be added to without trouble as the school grew. To carry out such a plan, it will probably be found advisable to incorporate with a capital of $4,000, divided 400 shares at $10 a share, One well known citizen has said he would take stock to the amount of $500, and others have signified their willingness todo correspondingly as much, There is no doubt that the Academy would with careful management prove a profitable and popular institution, and we trust that Mr. Potterand his friends will consummate their intentions concerning it. — New Words, The new edition of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, numbering 1928 quarto pages, contains nearly 5000 new words or new meanings of old ones. These-words range over the ficlds of science, “medicines, invention, discovery, re-séarch, etc., deparments which in this age are constanvly yielding fresh ideas, requiring new words to express them. That they have not been hastily compiled is evidenced by the accuracy of and careful study given to their etymology and definitions. The citizens of Nevada City assembled at the Court House last evening in accordance with the suggestion of the Republican and Democratic State Central Committees, for the purpose of expressing their. sentiments on the Chinese question. Jas. D. White and E. M. Preston of the Committee on Resolutions submitted the following as their report: : The people of Nevada City, California, in Mass Meeting assembled, irrespective of political parties, adopt the following: Résolved That we regard the unrestricted immigration of Chinese. — to this coast as an unmixed, evil, detrimental alike to the social and business interests of our people. Resolved That the efforts of our Representatives in Congress to se-. cure the passage of a bill restricting the immigration of Chinese, have our hearty approval, and that we urge said Representatives to use all honorable means to secure the speedy enactment of such a bill. The resolutions were adopted and _a copy of them was forwarded to Senators Miller and Farley in Washington. Sargent Jollification. Sargent’s friends here yesterday celebrated his confirmation as Minister to Germany by firing one hun dred guns, The fact that Nevada several years, in early times, leads our people to take a special interest in his welfare, and to rejoice at the country’s recognition of his great ability. Not Generally Observed. Yesterday was not as generally observed hereas other legal holidays are. More or less business was transacted at the Courthouse, the banks were kept open, and trade was carried on as on other days. The express and post offices were open but a part of the time.
