ne ye RO — — #UESDAY MORNING what We wants ern What we want at the head of the State Goverhment is a man~of honor and integrity ; of courage and independence ; the possessor.ot the greatest.of all virtues in a public man, the power ani thé will to.say ‘No ;* whose back. is braced with iron and not with millions; whose moral characteris spotless ; whose business record 1s unimpeached and unimpeachable ; whose ambition is to do right, and who has no fear in ‘the execution of the work ;. whose aim is the advancement of the interests of the people, aud not a stumbling blgck in shake way, who would scorn todo a dishonorable act, and who would refuse to lend himself to the angorgot the schemes of cortupt politicians; or-any other class of State plunderers. Have we such a man in our State?—<Spirit of the Times. fk “We have several such men in. the State, and more than two such have been pamed in connection with the Republican nomination for Governor The Times claims that Selby, comes,up. io the mark. We. say Newton Booth fills the bill, and we have already given our reasons for the faith that is in us. » General Redington, of Sacramento, for . stern integrity, lionesty of purpose and . ability, would ‘command the ‘heany Supp 2rt of Republicans, ehould he happen, to be preferred by the. Stiite Cons vention to other gedtlemen’ mértiinéd: His speech upon réceiving the nomination as Elector inthe last Piebiiential4 campaign, shows him to be a deep thinker and devoted to pringiple, Those who know. him -beat-honor and respect: him, and we feel confident he would come up to the standatd' in the extract above quoted. ‘The Republican’ party is at no loss for men whom as its candidates, can command the respect and support of the masses of the party — Even the politicians feel the hevessity of selecting such men, and from those . : mentioned in connection with the office we feel confident thé very best man will be chosen. It is no time now for factious contentions for favorites. If there be such, either of the gentlemen named have 'sufficient merit for fridtids tb ‘urge their claimis upon, without résorting to the abuse of all who happen to stand n the way, The Virginia City Stage Robbed. On Saturday morning last, the stage on the way from Reno to Virginia was . stopped on the Geiger grade, near where the robbery was committed four years ago. The late robbery wis cont mitted by three men armed ‘with shot guns. They came out:from the road side and compelled the driver to throw out Wells, Fargo & Co’s. treasure boxes, valuabl@’ @tarted off. The driver on being relféved, made the five’ miles to Virginia City in dg minutes; ‘The ala given and officers started in pursuit. One of the robbers ‘was captured on the road from the place, with his shot gun, coin packagés and other evidences-of ‘guilt on his ‘person, ~ His ‘mame is Jobnson alias Roland. Another man named Dean wasafterwarde . arrested in Virginia City, adit was, . @xpected the third robber would be caught, Gun. SHERMAN, President of the .Society of the Atmy of the Tennessee, an: . nounces that its fifth regular meeting will be held in Cincinnati oa the 6th and 7th of April, Col: John W, Noblé, of the Third Lowa Cavalry, will deliver the annnal address, Every officer who at any time served with honor in. the army and departments is, by the constitut‘on, entitled to a membership, and all such, as well as mémbers of kindred societies, are invited to attend the meeting. af ae Wyte _ AS8cHoor, girl in Ferdandana, Fla.,a a few nights ago, turned down the wick of her kerogene lamp, and as it continued to smoke she placed a book on the top ef the chimney. In a moment a fearful explosion took place, which re to her dress, to the cur, taing, ai the adjacent woodwork, " and she fatally burned, dying the next ig. On Saturday night, the 18th ult., two of, the new workmen were attacked by the old moulders on Main: ‘street, and knocked; down and beaten. One of the men attacked drew a knife to defend himself from further assault, and was arrested by an officer with the knife in his hand. Two of the assaulting party were also arrested, but the ringleader has thus far eluded the’ police, On Monday the parties were brought bes fore Judge Bultock at the Cry Court, and William H. Danley, the assaulted meulder, was ‘discharged, while ' John Ward, who assisted in the assault, was fined $5 and costs, A crowd of the Strikers attended the Court and follow: after the trial. But_as two officers acy eempahied him, no-assault was. com-= mitted. On’ Monday night one of the’ new moulders was assaulted in East Bridgeport by two petsohs, who came upon him suddenly, and he was so badly beaten as to be incapable of unable to identify his assailants, as it . was very dark when the assault was committed. The officers of the Mould. ers* Union deprecate ‘afl violence! and counse} only legal measures of oppesition. Lance Business’ 1n Cnkar’ JewELRY.— The manufacture of cheap plated, rubber and horn jewelry, says a Boston paper, has grown to be a very large, prosperous and increasing business, aud in Boston alone there are. five or six wholesale dealers who represent a capital of between $300,000 aod $400,000. The volame of ‘trade the past three or four months, foots up wu larger aggregate than at the ¢corress ponding time ayear ago, and manus facturers are now. generally busy, making up supplies for the Spring trade, Large orders are being copstanttly filled for shipments to Onlifor.: nia, made up.ef wide varieties andithe Kastern and Provincial trade has, been steady and satisfactory, while the West are hot siow in providing thems selves with these goods of New England manufactiré. Many ‘new styles _of pins, buttons, ladies’ sets, etc., are credible, as every society and elub adopts some emblem to be worn aga pin. Rubber and horn goods are very fashionab’e and popular, and -owing to their comparative cheapness, are sold ahd export. Hon. Reverdy Johnson, in a recent letter to the British Parliament, with whom he conducted the negotiations for cheaper postage between England and America, expresses. the hope. that the have a penny postage, believing that . besides the individual interests which cheap postage promotes, its effects in bringing together in closer union our countries will be to confirm those ftiendly relations which are so vital to our common prosperity and happiness, Iris rumored as a singular coincldence, that when the United States ‘Steamer Worcester, which ‘s to carry the tricolor was unturled from the flag staff instead of the, stars and: stripés—the flag having been taken from'the store house without examin~ img. . The forward end of her ‘boiler is all torn away or crushed in; but singular to relate her cylinder heads are intact, except the brass knobs ia’ the center which are. gone. ,Ot cqurse her smoke stack and head lights have not been found. There is no doubt that she was reversed, as Master Mechanic .Buchanan says she geared tackwerds; «= The. foot board where the engineer stands is partly gone, but the reverse lever is in its place.” Her drivers ate not Broken, but other ‘parts of the machinery, including her: patallek rods ‘atidfestoons are bent and twisted: SS Tae Carnkese License Case.—The case of Shefiff Jackson, indicted for collecting Foreign Miners’ tax from ‘Chinese, tried in the United States Gireuit Court, resulted in conviction, utes. The. Alta in. speaking of the case says : “Democratic officers in every ‘part of the State refused to obey the slaw.” This isa mistake. The officers in this county haye ,pot collected the tax since. the passage of the law. A curious fact in convection with this etial is that nearly all the jurymen were “Forty-niners,” and one of them came to the State in 1844. These men had no doubt all been at some time evgaged in mining. The case, it is said, will be taken ‘by the State au.
