what We wants ern
What we want at the head of the
State Goverhment is a man~of honor
and integrity ; of courage and independence ; the possessor.ot the greatest.of
all virtues in a public man, the power
ani thé will to.say ‘No ;* whose back. is
braced with iron and not with millions;
whose moral characteris spotless ;
whose business record 1s unimpeached
and unimpeachable ; whose ambition is
to do right, and who has no fear in ‘the
execution of the work ;. whose aim is
the advancement of the interests of the
people, aud not a stumbling blgck in
shake way, who would scorn todo a
dishonorable act, and who would refuse to lend himself to the angorgot the
schemes of cortupt politicians; or-any
other class of State plunderers. Have
we such a man in our State?—<Spirit of
the Times. fk

State, and more than two such have

him, and we feel confident he would
come up to the standatd' in the extract
above quoted. ‘The Republican’ party
is at no loss for men whom as its candidates, can command the respect and
support of the masses of the party —
Even the politicians feel the hevessity
of selecting such men, and from those . :
mentioned in connection with the office
we feel confident thé very best man will
be chosen. It is no time now for factious contentions for favorites. If there

The Virginia City Stage Robbed.
On Saturday morning last, the stage
on the way from Reno to Virginia was .
stopped on the Geiger grade, near

Tae Carnkese License Case.—The
case of Shefiff Jackson, indicted for
collecting Foreign Miners’ tax from
‘Chinese, tried in the United States
Gireuit Court, resulted in conviction,
utes. The. Alta in. speaking of the
case says : “Democratic officers in every
‘part of the State refused to obey the
slaw.” This isa mistake. The officers
in this county haye ,pot collected the
tax since. the passage of the law. A
curious fact in convection with this
etial is that nearly all the jurymen
were “Forty-niners,” and one of them
came to the State in 1844. These men
had no doubt all been at some time
evgaged in mining. The case, it is
said, will be taken ‘by the State au.
‘thorities to the Supreme Court of the
United Stetes for final adjudication.
