1m DAILY: TRANSCRIPT, NEVADA OITY, CAL. ‘BROWN & Zager or rs, BP. BROWN is vives. oe ee LEONARD 8. GALKINS ek Nevada County Oficial Press. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7. Mzarts are reported .to be much dearer in‘England than in this country, especially taking into account the relative purchasing power of money in other things. The London News recently sent a reporter to the Smithfield market, the great wholesale meat depot in London, and it wag found that mutton brought 22 cents per pound by ‘the carcass and 25 cents per pound for. a leg. The best joints of roasting beef are 114 to 12 pence, or from 23 to 25. cents. Beef, by the side, brings about 15 cents per pound, This accounts for the large shipments of American beef to the English market, and the increasing scarcity of the article for home. consumption. Were it not for the bread and meat products of the United States, England would be driven to ‘the verge of starvation. James GoRDON BENNETT'S generosity is complimented by .an Eastern journal, which says that he has a ..ptincely fortune and spends it extravagantly, but there seldom comes an appeal from distressed humanity that he does not hear and respond , to with generosity. He gave more to relieve the distress in Ireland than was given by any other individual, and his name usually appears beside the largest contribution when a call for help comes frow the masses. His gift of $7,000 to the aid of sufferers from the Ohio floods is the largest yet noted. ‘There are few more gen\ erous‘men in the world than James Gordon Bennett. . > Tux Alta says: ‘‘Nevada is not in such desperate plight as generally supposed. Her increase in population from 1870 to 1880 was at the rate of 46,53 per cent., and, although the population of Virginia City and other mining towns has diminished sinde 1880, that of the pastoral and agricultural regions. must have increased, Nevada is becoming a great ~—eattle country, and only patience is} needed to witness her revival from the decedance into which she fell when her principal mines gave out.”’ A wrattHy San Franciscoan is preparing to engage in tobacco culture on an extensive scale in Fresno county. He will this season plant about 200 acres which will be under = the charge of an experienced tobacco grower. The Fresno Expositor says that tobacco grows luxuriantly on the irrigated lands in that county, -and asserts that the quality will " equal-the best grown in any ane: ‘of —the-Unicn.-. on OTE rue it ict one cee ieee fe An immense warehgpse, half a mile long, to be owned by the Nevada Bank of San Francisco, is new building ‘on Carquinez Strait, near, Porta Costa. Three wharf franchises have been secured, and a wharf wil] be built stretching along the shore three-fifths of a mile. THe warehouse is to have a capacity of 60,000 / tons of grain, and will be finished in time for this year’s crop. , SPEAKING of extremes, Mrs. Minor says: “I have known a lady who wrapped herself iu furs and flannels until she could not enter her carriage door without a good push from her coachman, In Japan the.clothing of the body is thrown off with as little embarrassment as we feel in removing a glove, and there baths are frequently taken in public with infan= tile innocence.” An English mechanic has invented a horseshoe composed of three thicknesses of cowhide compressed in a steel mould and subject to a chemical-preparation. It will last longer than a common shoe, weighs only one fourth as much, does not split the hoofs, requires nocalks, and is very elastic. Tux proposed new charter for the ¢ity of San Francisco was beaten at Saturday’s election. The latest inMfermation received here is to the effect that there was a majority of about 60 votes against it. “Yxs, ” said the fair but false youag vocalist to Bumbleton, ‘‘that is an old English song with a refrain.” “Ah!” replied the crusty critic, “that just suits me. Refrain from singing it.” Fripay morning U. B. Weatherford, familiarly known as ‘‘Doc.” Weatherford, while getting out ties near Alta accidentally cut his leg with an axe and bled to' death. Geyerat Miuuzr is mentioned as a possible candidate’ for President, and.an_s<témpt is being made to it bring out Hancock. : TuE Mississippi steamer Yazoo was sunk above New Orleans Sunday, and sixteen persons were known ‘to have been drowned, ; pent SRS iisia ENR ES Jr is announced that Senater Tabor was secretly. married to his present ' wife at St. Louis last September. -Mosr of the jaan. on the Missisbetween Cairo and Helena are A Spoken Newspaper, a The latest Parisian idea’ is a spok: . M en daily newspaper. A hall or opera house of moderate size is to be hired, asmall admission fee charged and every evening a variety of brilliant talkers will rehearse the events of the day. The solemn talker, concise, striking, and inventing new phrases, will-discuss political questions, Thena bright news talker will describe the accidents and crimes, He will say, for example “I went down to the house in such and such astreet where a Husband had shot his wife with a revolver. The hair of the. victim was sucha color, the wounds were so deep. I ascertained all the facts myself.” Then the legislative reporter will reproduce the dehates—with the personality of the speakers and a description of the scenes and lively encounters. Then would come anecdotes and incidents in the lives of were attracting public attention, A lady would give an account of the latest dinner partyin full, with a brief description or Mlastration of the decorations and ‘toilets, The dramatic and musical critics would then do their parts, followed by the advertising man with personal illustrations of the man or woman before and atter taking the pulmonary syrup or the efficient hair restorer. With stereopticon pictures, sent. by the new telegraphic process, of fires, floods, railroad accidents, new buildings, balls, carnivals, collisions and all of the chief events of the day, it would doubtless be popular—at least as long as its novelty lasted. wee The Terrible Storm. Wiggins, the great Canadian Prophet, has predicted that! the very deuce will be to pay between the 9th and the 12th of the present month. The windows of the -heavens will open, rains will, descend, floods devastate the peacoful valleys — of America, and the wild winds will go forth seeking who they may devour. All this will commence on Friday next and will continue until Monday morning—unless Wiggins is mistaken. It is not worth while to worry about it,.but the chickens should be taken in and no family wiehing hung out, on Friday forenoon, and a good stock of groceries . ‘aiid provisions should be accumulat. ed, This is the way Noah did, and he rode through ‘the racket in ‘triumph, >. Lumzer is now being manufactured from straw, the standard size being thirty-two inches in width, 12 feet in length, and the thic kness the same as the average surface boards, One'ton of any kind of straw will yield 1,000 feet of boards that may be handled as ordinary ones, This lumber can be produced and sold in competition. with wide walnut at about half the price of the latter. -re Eve me oni tase atm me Tris proposed to organize a fire insurance company in Boston with a capital of $1, 000, 000, one-third of which shall be spent for apparatus to be used in extinguishing fires. It is argued that it is cheaperfor companies to protect their own risks in the heart of a largé sity than to depend upon the city to do it. WHEN a friend asked. a ‘reformed inebriate the cause of his reformaton, he‘said: ‘‘As you are married, you will quite understand me when [say getting tipsy made me see my mother-in-law double,” THs sublimest state of misery is endured only by a man with a atifly-starched vest, a collar that won’t stay buttoned behind, a pair of tight shoes and a blackberry seed between his front teeth. “BRACE uP !” whispered the hangman to the fellow whose hémpen cravat he was adjusting. ‘‘Yes, it is easy for you to say that,” was the grim reply, ‘‘because you are a‘suspender.” 2 A LITLE girl was walking on the street the other day, when she saw a very bow-legged man, with a short coat on. “Oh, ma!” she cried,. ‘‘there’s a man with a tunnel under him !” ~ Tr is now fashionable to speak of the night robe as a nap sack. A Bosron girl describes a statue .as a bust with two legs under it. THE trial of thirty socialists begins at Vienna to-day. Nora Perry says in a recent letter : ‘I’m not surprised at anything Mr. Howells says.” Now is the time for Mr. Howells to remark that Nora is prettier than Mrs. Langtry. —=> “No,” HE said, ‘“‘I never swear hard before 3 p, M._ There’s always something sure “to occur latérs and I warit,'my heaviest. oaths in reserve fOr a.
