“Navigating THE HomBoLpt.—Some
Jiave ‘conceived the idea of navigating the:
Humboldt River. from the sink, or Humboldt Lake, toa point. somewhere near the
Idaho line, called Winnemucca—a disYanice estimated at 186 miles, The Owyhee .
Avalanche says the project is setiously entertained, and expresses the opinion. that
be considerably shortened by using this
strip of navigable water. Although the
various maps im our possession failto show
it, we presume the Humboldt River fol
lows the direction of the road to Owyhee
for a considerable distance; and just for
the looks of the thing—for the gratificafi
tion of announcing that Nevada really
possesses facilities for inland navigation,’
however limited the extent—we hope the
dammed and dredged and steamboated.—
It is the exclusive property of Nevada,
it rises within the boundaries of the State,
and pours its waters down the throat of
of the Twenty-six Mile Desert. And the
desert is ours, and Lake Humboldt, and all
he sage brush and rank grass that grow:
‘around its marshy borders. And the
many, Very many, stories of suffering and
e emigrants’ of 1849-'50,
who crossed that’ tt, are ours; and if
the troubled shades of the hundreds who
perished there sometimes e the desolate spot at midnight, when the n is
new, we claim ‘the phantoms ‘as an intan.
gible possession of fhe State: Nevada will
yet be distinguished for something besides its. veins of silver. A few weeks
since a party, desirous of testing the na.
vigable capacity of the Humboldt, ‘con.
structed a small boat of some sort, at
“An account of the trip is published in the
‘story of the trip ts interesting. For many
iles the river was found to be from two
ghd a half tosix fect in depth, and very
¢rooxed, It is about sixty feet in width.
The character of the river remains about
the same. to its mouth, with occasional
rapids and shallows. To renderit navigable, two or three dams will have to be re-moved, and a number of wing dams cdnstructed to deepen the channel, but the
gentlemen furnishing the accoant thinks
every obstacle can be removed.” On reaching the mouth of the river, the party
could not find a passage into the lake, owing to the rank growth of the tules, but an
outlet forty feet in width is known to the
settlers and Indians, and can easily be
found. The distances are thus given by
the writer :

At Thacker’s wood can be purchased in
abundance at $10 and $12 per cord, and
the writer says the river can be made navigable-at a small expense. The purpose
is to constiuct a shorty light-draught,
stern-wheel steamboat, with which. it is
believed freight and passengers can’ be
conveyed a distance of 186 miles on their
way to Idaho, at the rate of six or seven
tiles an hour. The writer says the Humboldt‘is the most crooked river hé ever
saw. Ifso, how many miles,'as the road
runs, would that 186 miles of navigation
equal? Probably less than a hundred.

Irs FouRTEENTH:-VoLUME.—The GF
Valley Union says: “The Nevada TRANSCRIPT yesterday entered its fourteenth
volume, and, as we have reason to know,
it begins the new volume in a health
financial condition. -We have been a nae
er, but not a “constant reader,” of the
TRANSCRIPT, since its first issue, whet the
genial General Allen contributed his pleasantries to'its colamns.and while we have
not indorsed itin all things; while, in fact,
we have had to regulate some of its shortcomings, we have always regarded it with
high favor, and our associations with its
proprietors and editors have been of an
agreeable character. It is a good local paper, @ little too strong on Radicalism to
suit our Conservative notions, which, however, is an affair of ita conductors and not
ours ; and we hopeit may continue a-source
of profit to its owners, Brown & Deal, for
many years to come. ’
Trist ELECTION PLACARDS.—Some of
the placards used inthe late Waterford
election were very inflammatory ; the following for example : “people of Watertord

and the cat’o-nine-tails? Thg Beresfords.
What did O’Connell say of tliem in 1826 ?
The Beresfords, who were never known to

who voted against congcience and country
will be published in placards through the
city and country immediately, after the
