The Duily Transcript,
NEVADA CITY.
LOCAL ITEMS.
Arrested.
Sheriff Dickson received a telegram
from Deputy Sheriff Cook, of Dutch
Flat, describing one Wilson, and requesting that he be arrested and re.
tained until an officer could reach Nevada, Aman answering to the description was arrested by Dickson~ yes:
terday morning. The party arrested
said he came from Marysville, and
gave his name as William Walker.
He also produced a discharge in that
name from the Fourteenth Massachusetts Regiment, and denied that—he
had come from Dutch Flat. He came
so near the description, however, that
Dickson detained him and telegraphed
to Cook. We did not learn the charge
against Wilson.
The Nevada Quartz Mine.
The Nevada quartz mine,well known
as the old “Soggs’ mine,” located on
Deer Creek, abunt.a mile. below thjs
city, has been leased for a term of
years by S. Johnson, an experienced
miner. He proposes first to open the
old tunnels. and ascertain what has
been done and the character of the lead,
after which the future course in working will be -decidedupon. This mine
working, prove one of the best in the
county. When last worked it was
badly managed and did not pay. We
are glad it hawsfallen into the hands of
a practical miner and hope he may be
well paid for the enterprise,
St. Patrick’s Ball, x
A grand ball will be given at Tefa
perance Hall on the eveaing of St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th. Excellent mu:
sic will be on hand, and every effort
will be made by the managers having
charge to make the party pleasant for
all who attend. The supper will be
excellent, and as the Festival is intended for a good vbject it should be
largely attended.
The Habeas Corpus,
The hearing in the case of the two
Chinumen who were brought before
Judge Niles yesterday morning, on a
writ of habeas corpus, was continued
until Monday at 10 o'clock, and pending the hearing bail was fixed in each
case at $120. The ground upon which
the discharge is asked is that the sen
tence was pronounced on Sunday.
Held. for the Grand Jury.
Marshal Harris, of Grass Valley, yes.
terday brought up a Chinaman named
Ah Lan and lodged him in the county
jail. Heis held onthe charge of an
attempt to commit burglary, and failing to give bonds of $500 to appear before the next Grand Jury, was sent to
jail by Justice Paynter.
ef Cattle,
Charley Kent yesterday left for Reno
to purchase beef cattle for this market,
Geod cattle are scarce on this side of
»the Sierras at this season, The markets in this locality are now supplied
with better beef than for some time.
The animals were purchased by Cashin
& Kent from the celebrated Walsh
ranch in Colusa county. They are of
the Durham breed and are fat enough
to make unusually good beef.
Noon,
_J. B. Newman, formerly in the gro~
cery business in Helena, Montana, is
manager of a lottery started recently
at that place. The tickets are to be
sold at $5 00 in currency, and $9,000 is
to be given in 400 prizes. The largest
isa $1,000 gold bar and the nexta
$500 gold bar. The other prizes are
from $400 to $10 in Currency. Newman is well known in this locality, and
will probably remember where “noon”
comes in.
Late Papers,
Spencer & Pattison have received
the New York Ledger and the Black
Crook, The latter gives illustrations
of tableaax and scenes from the great
spectacular play as produced ag Niblo’s,
which in one rat of 470 nights, brought
‘the management $1,100,000,
a
Burning and shaking.
By a ridiculous thtsapplica.ion of language
poor health,” but itis not on record that
any hnman being was ever spoken of as enJoying chillsand fever, and yet there are
thousands, at this moment, in one or the
other of the two stages of the disorder, who
might just as well have avoided it as not. If
there is@nything demonstrable in therapeéutics, it is that Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is
an antidote to intermitteut fevers. No instance can be cited in wuich it has been
taken, either as a safeguard against this class
of diseases or asa remedy tor them, and
failed to preduce the desired effect. The
season when malarious fevers are rife, has
commenced, and no inhabitant of any district suhject to their. visitations should be
without this great preventive and remedy,
Indeed, it is a most potent protection against
all the ailments which prevail in the Spring
months. From marsh and pool, and from
all moist soils are now rising the mephitic
elements which. give: birth to fever, indigestion, biliousness, colics, and a whee host of
epidemic and other maladies, Aid the system to resist them, Energize and regulate
all the animal functions with this reinforcing
agent. This precaution is as necessary in
cities as in new settlements, for malarious
fevers are now almost as common in the
great centers of opulation as on the borders
of the sothern bayous and marshes and the
rich agricultural regions ‘of the west. The
preventive and remedy is accessible to all.
