Mooney Fiat Items.
Aletter from Mooney Flat, “un:
der date of the 4th instant, says:
“The hydraulic: mines are running
night and day at Mooney Flat. The
electric lights have been erected
again. The company have struck a
very fine streak of gravel superior to
anything they have been able to find
heretofore at the Flat. Some of the
@ opinion
that the main channel crosses. the
road instead of running in the direction of the tunnel. If the late location is correBt, the towa ots which
it passes through will be in good
demand. It is said they cannot get
to the bottom of the gravel or down
to the bed-rock, to wash it, because
it is lower than ‘the mouth of the
tunnel, This will of course necessitate drifting or running-a deeper
tunnel, Probably two or three
months will develop the true location
of the lead.”

Land League Meeti ng.
The Land League meeting in this
city Monday evening was one of the
most interesting yet held. The attendance was good. Six new mem.
bers were received, increasing the
number belonging to the Nevada
county branch to about 270. The receipts of the evening for dues, etc.,
Were $61.75. Addresses’ were delivered .by—Father Meagher, ‘Johi
Hussey, Leopold Garthe, J.J. Rogers
and others. Jas, Kendrick, Sr.,
sang a pleasing Irish ballad, and
there were other exercises. The
next meeting will be held at ‘Grass
Valley next Saturday evening.
Not an “Emigrant.”
The North San Juan Times says
the editor of the Transcripy has
been in Nevada county but a short
time, or in other words that he is
an “emigrant.” That’s where our contemporary is badly mistaken. The
editor in question was born in this
township. He went east to: attend
school, returning here in 1877. He

Operations Being Carried on in Va.
Sous Quarters,
Work having
through the new shaf; On accouns of
the heavy flow of water, the Derbec
Company are principally confining
their operations to the old workings,
The car-mules have been taken down
into the bowels of the earth
and the stable rebuilt for their acmonths before these faithful creatures
see sunlight again. The making of
a drain tunnel is undoubtedly neces.
sary to the Prosperity of that claim,
It contains large deposits of rich
gravel, but tlie enormous expense of
raising the water by steam power
precludes the probability of anything better than Trish dividends. A
tunnel when completed would do
away with a very large proportion of
the expense, and it is likely that
before long the Company will “pro
ceed_to act on this idea, :
The Mt. Auburn quartz-mine of
this district is not dead, but sleeping. Superintendent Kiriy intends
‘to returnhere soon and resume operations, A mill of twenty or more
stainps will be erected, according to
the present plans. The mine, was
well prospected previous to last Fall,
and the owners know that the ore is
there to warrant the improvements.
At their next meeting the-Murchie
Mining Company will consider the
advisability of increasing their present crushing facilities by putting up,
another twenty-stamp mill. It ig
thought the measure will be adopted.
-There is believed to be éndugh ore in
Sight to keep ag many as fifty stamps
busy.
The new mill at the Merrifield
will be ready to start within about
two'weeks. It is made for twenty
stamps, doubling the present crushing
capacity, but only half of that nuinber willbe put in before summer,
Geo. G. Allan is the contractor, and
a better job has never been done in
the’ ‘county. Mr: Allan turns out
only first class work, The Merrifield
is'in a very prosperous condition,
and is paying its owners well if anything can be judged from appearances.
The Wyoming is running sixteen
stamps day and night and has a full
force of men at work,
The Pittsburg, after along rest,
getting a good start for a summer’s
active work. The new drain tunnel
will greatly facilitate developments,
The forty. stamps at the Providence are pounding away on a good
grade of ore. This mammoth gold
producer ranks high among . the
quartz mines of the Sate, and it. is
constantly growin? ia vali,
The Mountaineer. is running’ five
stamps twelve hours a diy aad on
good rock, Tae work of deyelopment is progressing satisfactorily,
The new shaft at the Banner. is
now down about 4)) fess, and is
going dow rapidly. The running
of drifts will not be begun till the
depth of 890 feet has veen attained,
The Marchie has started its. 700
foot level.
The incline of the Nevada City
reached the 450 foot level last week,
and drifting has begun both north
and south. Stoping is being done.
on the first, second and third levels,
and the ten stamp mill is going night
and day.
A gentleman who ought to know
says that Mr. Clark jis expected to
return here next month and begin
work on ‘the North Marrifield, of
which he has secured the control in
the interest of an Eastern company.
Connection will soon be made by
the Nevada City ming with the
Wyoming drain tunnel which will
greatly facilitate operations in the
former. P ‘i
The Canada’ Hill mine (Charonnat’s) is making good developments and keeps’ five stamps running.

There are several unworked
claims
in various parts of kthe distcict that
the owners propose to put in operation when the Spring opens. Some
of these are being negotiated
for by
capitalists, but the majority of them
will be retained by local operators.

We have received a report of the
Proceedings at Sweetland; and will
publish it to-morrow,
At You Bet a mass meeting was
held Saturday, ‘John Spaulding acting as Chairman, Hon, J. H. Neff
addressed the meeting. Much enthusiasm prevailed, and strong antiChinese immigration resolutions
were adopted. The citizens unanimously participated and the meeting was closed with rousing cheers
for Senators/Miller and Farley,
A large and enthusiastic antiChinese mass-meeting was held at
the I. 0. of G.'T. Hall at Truckee,
Saturday evening. All business
‘was suspended in order to enable the
people to attend, and all classes of
citizens were represented. Addresses
were made-by the most’ prominent
business arid professional men of the
town, stromgly favoring the
of the anti‘Chinese bills before Congress, Appropriate resolutions were
passed sustaining the actions of our
representatives in Washington,
which were ordered to:be forward.
ed to the Chairman of the Rapublican and Democratic State Central
Committees: and to the National
Capitol.
A Wine Selection,
Captain James Bennallack,: of
.Grags Valley, has gone to Alpine
county to examine some. mines in
that section for an English Company,
Perhaps it would be impossible to
find another man in the State who
is more thdroughly versed in quartz
mines, or a more reliable expert
than Mr. Bennallack. He has spent
almost a life time in mining and his
judgment we should regard as
second to none. We are pleased to
know that these English capitalists
have:selected him-as an expert on
their-“mines, for hig report will be
correct: to the letter *¢” and it~ may
be the means of drawing capital to
our own county.
