SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 1867. _ RubocTION or TAXES. —Every citizen ; 6 approaching era of low taxes . With fox. T'Phe iow Hevehue Law makes exempti hich.-will, probably lighten the . Foderal texoy tbr this county $110, 000. The aiiount of taxes. Already assédsed, ‘heobrding: to the books of Collector 8: B. Davenport, is $147; 595, and there are still t months remaining to be .assessed on the present year, which will raise the; amomnt to-about $150,000, It-is-esté . mated that. under the new.law the entire Kederal evenue of the, county -will not amount to more than $40,000 this year, leaving a Cleat gain to tax payers of $110, 000. .1t.is probable that the new law ‘ap. plies to incomes of 1865, upon which retarnsare now being made, but upon which #the, atsessment is_aot conipleted : until May, There are about cight hundred persons in the county who paid incétites last’ year. ‘Of this number it is es timated that 6ne half had’ incories Which did not exceed $1,000 per year. Under the new: law these are all exempt and the uniform rate. is. fiye per cent., thus cutting off one half the tax of those who made over $5,000. The other changes madein the Jaw are not known, but in _ assessing, Mr. Richmond is leaving the exemptions blank, and the new Jaw will be-received in-time to make them all befofe the assessment_is completed. This jon. of taxes, so.s00n. after subhe gi-PAHC War as ‘the nation has successfully . carried through, is. _the best evidence of the great power ‘and immense wealth ‘of the country and the power of the Government, It also shows that the policy of tlie . great Union party isto lighten the burderis of taxation as rapidly as it can be safely done, * The people-of Nevada county'are peculiarly fortunate, for in’addition to the reduction of Federal taxes they have had the county taxes materially decreased ᐀ They ; have no county debt upon which to pay interest, and under the “administration ef the Union party they are’ not like. ly.to have one, While taxation is not burdensome, they have boundless mineral resources: The: mines are annually pouring millions: of. gold into the world‘s treneufy;aind' besides, the soil and climate possess ‘an undeveloped wealth which will . inttime be breught forth, There is no reasom Why the’ valleys and hillsides of Nevajcomb, ‘bottle of Sozodont, bottle of Lubin’s da county should not be cgvéred with grain and‘ clothed with vinés and fruit . trees, which will yield a retura.second on. ) ly to the mines.. No part of she globe can ~ Offer, a langer or -more. promising field for _ enterprise and capital than this county, and when citizens learn. this truth, every risiiig sth will mark an advance in wealth wack prosperity, GHARLEY Kuwr, of Nevada, ‘says the Californian, passed thro ysville on Tuga lab, ali 120 New ot Bc deen fattest cattle that was ever furnishedto — mountain ’ ‘beef consumers. The union sentimen of his Connesg, let ter have damned him with the copperheads, and his chance of getting into the Union ranks is as. slight.as his prospect of flying to the moon. Poor Bugbey made a lively brush for the place, and had.it within his grasp, when by some strange necromancy Bagbey was humbugged and Blakeney was nominated and confirmed. But alas for the uncertainty of the Assessorship; it now appears that Blakeney is notieligible in consequence of his not being a resident. of the Fourth. District— Verily; Avery is not, Bigler isnot, Bugbey is not, and will Blakeney, also be let out ? save Blakeney have any right to the office, their claims being all terminated by the acts of the Senate. If he is not eligible, then under section 8 of the Revenue Law, the Assistant Assessor “is entitled to the office. The law provides that in case of a vaganey oecurring by “reason.of death or any other cause, the Assistant Assessor of the Assessment district in which the As. sessot’ resided “At thé time Of thé vacancy . occurring, shall act a8 Assessdr until ab appointment filling the -yacancy, shall. be made,” _ We believe that Mr. Avery, father of the late Assessor, ia the oldest, Asgistant and that he-hag never been removed. if there is‘a vacancy, he is the properman to, fill it until-an appointment. is miade under the new tenure of office law.,, We, hope the question as to the Asgessorship may soon be settled, for the deputies are as undetermined as a swarm of bees within the sound of a chorus of Chinese gongs. Every day's new Assessor is announced, aiid . it is difficult for them to know, to whom to Revenue Office at Washington ean give a decided opinion as to who the Assessor is . for the Fourth District. . for today,-by the members of Nevada .
