LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,
___GaRDENING.—A large number of our
_ people are busily engaged in pruning
their trees and vines, and cultivating
their gardens, and there is a—-general
disposition.among our citizens to beau___tify their homesteads. Some’ of the

miners nothing more than a semi-civi‘zed population, if they -would send a
correspondent to Nevada would find
that the mountaineers can teach them
something about beautiful -homes“and
“comfortable cottages. The numskull of
the Zimes would not be astonished that
people live and eat and make money,
and that-chiidren grow and are educated in the mountains, if he would visit
our homes and look into our school
rooms. :

Christian people of Nevada, in common
‘with those of other places in the State»
are discussing ‘the propriety of making
an effort to edacate the Chinese among

educated Chinese sent back to their
homes with an understanding of the
nature and objects of Christianity, will
do more good than ten times the numguage of the people. The Chinese of
California offer a better field for the
missionary labors of Christians than
any other on the globe. “Behold the
‘. harvest is ready but the laborers are.
few.” ‘The matter was discussed inthe
Methodist Sunday School on Sunday
Jast, and it was suggested that the
Christian denominations of the city
unite inthe good. work, and-we presume a meeting will be called shortly
to take decided steps in the matter.
THE Howson Trovpe.—Oar readers
will remember the Howson English.

formances in this city, about two years
ago, and drew crowded houses for sev~

that they will again perform at the
Theatre in this city on Thursday and
Friday of this week, when they will
render some-of-the-gemis of English
Opera in a manner that only the How~

the Theatre will be crowded.
