{ { f NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, FRIDAY, MAY 4, 1868, . THE Curngse Banquet.—The long basey was given in San Francisco on Tuesday evening. That eminent Democratic Governor, Haight, presided. He supped and talked with Chih; Tajen> Sun’ Tajen and the rest of the Chinese ~ Embassadors, and made a speech in which he predicted the glorious “tesults which would flow from comimercial intercourse with the Chinese Empire; and Casserly, the Democratic Senator, and MeCoppin, Democratic Mayor, were. there also. Think of it yo “moss cov-" ered Democrats” of Nevada who heard. the Governor during the canvass denounce the Chinese as thieving, opiumsmoking barbarians, and ask yourselves if the Governor has ‘not got into the company most appropriate for him ac” cording to his own statement. We have no objections to thé Governor en. tertaining Chinese, but such a course we should not think calculated to sat-. isfy his followers of his sincerity in so bitterly denouncing them during the campaign.“ Then “he ‘wanted to shut. out Chinese from intercourse with the United States,. Now he. wants to build up commores, knowing that commercial intercourse will induce ‘immigration. He stands before the people convicted ‘ of inconsistericy upon the Chinese question, His course proves that he simply played the demagogue during the caiipaign-for the purposeof making a little. cheap capitat-on the prejudices of the ignorant, ‘ Ri —— Tue Democratic: Convention.— The State Democratic Convention met in San Francisco on Wednesday and organized by electing old Uncle Helden temporary chairman: On taking the. chair he let off his bile against Congress, Freetiom’s’ Defendérs ‘and the Grand: Army of ‘tho: Republic, all: of whieh is very natural. . ‘The Army of the Republic is composed. of loyal soldiers who crushed the rebellion, Congress is’nt Democratic ‘and Freedom’s Defenders are loyal. Verily these are . sufficient reasons for the, ebulition of Democratic wrath, In the Southern District Axtell is said to have a clean. majority for the nomination on the Con: gressional ticket. The Convention expected to get through work yesterday, There will probably be a lively fight over the nomination for Congress in the Second District. Sacramento has instructed for ‘Coffroth and Nevada county, whose delegates want Watt, are instructed to nominations. The oppose . fight over this question will likely be ay lively. _ SPIRITUAL MINING.—The Shasta Courier says that a spiritual medium in San Francisco has described the locality of a pay lead in the Bunker Hill mining claims near that place. We have had several such communications to parties in this county, and some responsible digging has been done but nolead has ever been found. The spirits or their mediums lied in regard to the Matter. It is surprising that men of good sense will allow themselves to be the dupes of either spirits or mediums, Tae IMPEACHMENT .—Evarts, coun ee] for Johnson, made his argument on the 28th. He takes the ground that Representatives were making a parti «an warfare upon the President, and that the reconstruction measure of .Congrees are an unconstitutional en: croachment upon the authority of the President, and appeals to the Senate to set aside the purposes of the House.— He had not concluded when the Sena adjourned on Wednesday. i Tuk tenure of office bill isno new thing. The subject spe apg canvassed, but without ts, in 1835, ning C. L. Graves, matager, opened the Nevada Theatre with a first class company, consisting of the Rand Sisters—Olivia andRosa—supported--by Harry Brown—an old Nevada favorite and ene of the most pleasing actors on Willey and others. ‘This is decidedly the best‘company that has appeared in this city for a long time. It is difficult todind two actresses posséssing— versatility of talent as the Rands, and they certainly made a-good impression on the audience. The opening piece was the “Three Fast Women,” a local drama, lively, and thrilling with scenic effects, and-fully equal to the popular piece, entitled, “Under the Gas Light. The piece is not, a8 some haye concluded from the title, of a fast character.— The performances of the company are worthy ‘of the.patronage of the most fastidious and are sure to pl the refined, The characters were well sustained throughout the piece, and thie railroad scene was one of the niost thrilling ever witntesed in this city. Atthe conclusion of the play Graves was call“ed before the curtain and made a speech, . in which he stated that he proposed to visit this.city from time to time during the season, and that he would bring out the best pieces in. first-rate style, and that our citizens would have an opportunity of seeing the best talent on the coast. Graves’ reputatiun as a manager and his character as aman are sufficient guarantee that he will do as he promises and‘hée should be’ well‘ sustained by--théatre goers. The minstrel scené, in which the Ratid: Sisters ‘dccupied the ends was first rate. Our people have never heard better singing than on Wednesday night. They have musical voices,of great power, and their enunciation is faultless. The sisters rendered « duet in splendid style. “I will be true.to thee’ delighted the audience. “The sabre of my sire,” sung by Rosa Rand as a solo, and in which the company joined in the chorus, was one of the finest. songs we have ever heard, and it was rendered with excellent effect. When the curtain fell the audience called them out again;and it was repeated. Should this troupe visit the city again, they will find the theatre will be crowded. Their pieces and songs are nearly all new, and the music sion, OE Grass VALLEY IteEM.—The following items we obtain from the Union. Sheriff Neff of Placer county, on Tuesday last arrested two highwaymen at Folsom, known as Texas John and Jim. Smith, They are charged ‘with the robbety of Mr. A. (i, Reed, of ‘Todd’s road between Todd’s Valley and Auburn. Phe robbers took-from “Mr: Reed his watch and $128 in money. The valuables were not recovered. Texas John bears an unenviable notoriety, and is considered a dangerousman, _ The Union Hill Mine, after being idle, has again resumed work, and the prospects are flattering indeed. A new shaft has been started down, and after sinking twenty-five feet the Jedge was struck from which rock has been taken which is truly magnificent. This rock isnow being crushed at Laton’s mill, and a partial clean up has been made. Altogether the rock has paid $50 per ton, and much of it is saved aside as Specimen rock which is worth, perhaps, a thousand dollarsa ton. With anything like a selection, the rock from the new shaft will average about $200 per ton, On Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, the house of widow Odgers, near North Star Mill took fire from a defective stove pipe, atid before the flame could be subdued the roof was entirely consumed and the main part of the buildTHE THEATRE.—On Wednesday évethe “‘stageGraves, Sinclair, Dennis, . alone is Well Worth the price of admis .
