The Boys’ Skating Race, On Monday evening the Young America of this-City and “Grass Valley had an opportunity to test their speed on rollers, at the: skating rink in this city, In order to make the thing interesting, Mr. Bullard, the proprietor, offered a prize of $5 to the boy making the quickest time around the room eleven’ times—dis-. tance half a mile. None were permitted to contest for the prize who were over 15 years of age. Ten entries were made, and thelittle fellows demonstrated conclusively that. they+ were more thai a match for their “‘hest licks” for the prize on Saturday evening last. Loring Knowlton made the half mile in 2.2914—being two seconds and a half better time than that made by Walter Finnie, of Grass Valley, who carried off the sleeve buttons. The following are the. names of the boys who skated, and the time made: 1, Chas, Hanson, 2.3714, 2. Chas. MeBrown, 2.322, Frank Guild, 2.5144. 4. Sumner Dibble, 2.361;, 5. Dudley Helm, 2.37. 6. The crowded houses which greeted them during their engagement at the Alhambra Theatre, San Francisco, and the high enconiums of the press are ample guarantees that the exhibitien tonight will be first class. At this season the vegetable world takes a new lease of life; but to the sensitive and delicate members of the human family it is a time of danger and often of great. suffering. The moisture which rises from the earth and hangs suspended over it in the form of morning and evening mists and fogs, holds in solution, so to speak, the mephitic elements which produce fever and ague, remittenst fevers, rheumatism, and many painful nervous disturbances, and which aggravated dyspepsia, biliousness and all minor affections of the stomach and the bowels. This, therefore. i& a critica] period of the year, a season when the renovating, refreshing and purifying operation alteratives, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, is salvation to the weak and the best security for the continuance of the health and vigor of the strong.
