Warren Spencer who came down Thursday from the San Jose mine says that everything is prospering up there, and he thinks the time is near at hand when the San Jose will become known as one of the best drift mines in the county. Mr. Spencer had a thrilling expériencein-the snowstorm of a week ago last Monday. He went on the stage from this city to the junction of the Rear Valley and Washington roads, and then started afoot by the trail to the mine two and three quarter miles distant. He wandered around in the snow five hours, having lost his way, and had become too feeble to travel further when some of the men from the mine who had started out to search for him found him. He says he would have perished in an hour or two more. He was confined to his bed three days as a result of the hardships be endured. Hereic Treatment. Tidings: The new trertment for Spinal and other diseases —suspending the patient by the ueck—is being tried at Grass Valley. M. Callahan is the patient. On Wednesday a harness fitting under the chin and the back of the head, around the neck and under the arms, was put on to ‘Callahan, when he was by aid of a rope and pully suspended in mid-air for a very brief time. This treatment elongates the spinal cords—it is nerve-stretching, and is said to be very effective. Callahan will haye to submit to the ordeal at stated periods. A Victim of Absinthe. Ed Hutchings, the miner who was locked up a few days ago for insanity, and shortly.after recovered his mental bearings and was turned loose, is an absinthe fiend. A man who knows him says that he has frequently seen him take halfa glass of the worm woodflavored liquid which has such elevating influence on the brain of mankind. The history of the past has proven beyond a question that an endowment policy in a life insurance company is @ much BETTER INVESTMENT Than a savings bank; FIRST, because it is‘very much safer—as the law of the State of New York requires every life insurance company to keep a Reserve in First-Class Securities Equal to its liabilities, dollar for dollar; SECOND, in case of death while making these small deposits, the life insurance company will pay, just when most needed by the family, the Full Amount Of the sum insured, amounting to 10,20, or even 30 times as much as has been deposited; or on the Return Premium Plan of the Manwarran, they would do even more than this, for they would at death pay the face of the policy, and in addition all the deposits (premiums) paid, while the savings bank would only return the amounts actually deposited with interest. Who would not purchase a valuable piece of property—a farm, forexaimple twenty years to pay for it, in small sums of $300 per annum with interest on deferred payments, and without a 3 tax on it? the $300 per vear being only 3 per cent. of the $10,000—a sum not much greater than that paid annually for taxes on property in hand, of the same cost, and especially if he could have the further conditions specially stated in the contract, Ist, that if he dies while making these payments—even after one only has been made—No Further Payments Shall be Required, And the full title in fee simple to the entire farm shall at once be given to the family; and 2d, that if atany time after three years during the twenty years he shall be unable to contiuue the payments and from sickness or any misfortune, that then he conld discontinue any further payments and have in fee simple such portions of the farm as he had paid for; thus, if onefourth of the payments had beenmade, he would own one separate fourth of the farm’; if one-half of the payments had been made, he would own onesame time the farm be entirely free from all claims of creditors, under all circumstances, not even to be reached by: writ of execution or attachment issued b the end of the twenty years and the annu.l payments have been made, the Entire Property in Fee Simple 18 secured. ;
