NEVADA CITY, CAL.
Saturday, May
=
1, 1875.
Destructive Conflagration, —
Eastern cities are subject to conflagrations which sweep everything
before them and destroy millions of
dollars worth of -property before
they can be stayed. The beautiful
town of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is the
———“qast sulferer, On Wednesday, “a fire}
broke out and all the business portion of the town was destroyed, All
the newspaper offices, ali the hotels
put one, all the banks, the opera
house, the post-office, the Universalist Church, all the dy goods stores
“on the north side, and in fact nearly
all the busitiess portion of the town
was swept clean. The city contains
about 20,000 inhabitants. The fire
occurred on the principal business
street and must have extended over.
an area of more than a mile and a
he buildings ‘on the street were
principally of bri¢k, although there
were‘ many-wooden-ones—fit—only-to“kindle the. flames, The Opera
House was a large stone structure.
‘The fite department consisted a few
years age, of two steam and
two hand ‘engines, with o1ie}
or ‘two hook and ladder
companies. Tho Wolf River divides
the town, and water for fire purpeses
in the vicinity is obtained from it.
In other parts of the town under.
ground reservoirs are constructed, in
~ which water is stored for use at fires.
The fire department was a very eflicient one and. had heretofore been
able to coitro} any fire that has been
kindled. Oshkosh had facilities for
protection equal te most cities; yet
the fire fiend swept the town, un,
checked, ‘[hisis only another instance showing the necessity of improved means of extinguishing fires.
Chicago and Boston have wealth
enough te—qdopt any scheme.that
‘ ‘will secure indemnity from. fire, yet
they have been destroyed, The only safe course for cities to pursue, is
%
‘to allow none but fire-proot buildings
. to be erected, aud if any others are
standing, to have them replaced by
those that will resist that destructive
element. The public good demands
that he. who owns property which
endangers the safety of others, shall
“pe Gompelled to tear it down and
build anew or dispose of -it to those
whe will. Every city and town have
their rookeries er tinder. boxes that
“are fit only for food for. the flames,
and itis generally in such structures
that fires originate. Our town has
more than'its share of them. Our
~~” fire “department is efficient, but an
extensive fire in Chinatown would
be more than it could master.
