The Military Hrass Band of this city accompavied them. . A delegation of young boys frou the pubdli¢ schools comprised a part O° the excursionists. The little ‘fellows bore aloft trau~pare neies, up on some of which were the fullowing Be nteuces: “Dr OD caat can't make laws for us,’ ve e . ‘are ‘t » be your Future Ci tizens.’ es The New Constitution is the Enemy of’ Our Schools.” —+pon't Broak up Oar High Schools,” ‘No Shyster Laws for us.” “Not too much Constitution for us.” “No Class Leyis'ation Wanted." f‘The New Constition Deprives us of Liberty. “Free Excurision to Grass Valley —Chinamen aud Other Indians Excepted.” **Let us Inherit the Liberty of our Fathers,” “We don't take O’Donnell’s Medicine.” On one of the transparaucies was _the head ofa donkey, 1. sbelled ‘*Modern Cupstitution Maker,” and anotbef presyated the ugly mug of Denis Kearney, bis tacea yard“ Jong, and liis hair standing straight to such an extent that the ends of it projected above his long drawn out ears, the written déecription © of this artistic production ‘explaining that it repreponte nA Kearneyite Atter E lection.’ The Speaker’ 8 stand on Mill street Grass Valley, was elegantly de curats ed with bunting atid flowers. ‘It stood on ‘the upposivs ‘s.de of the pirest froni the Masonic and Odd Fellows Hail) the front of which wag bruliantly ifluminated with a series of gas jets. ‘lie street was packs with people ‘for a long distance either side’ of the stand, the crowd being variously estima el to nun per from’ ,500"to 2,000. JJ. Dorsey waa elected Chairman, and after making a few remarks he introduced Hua. E, C. He had foresworn discussing public m stters, he o gaid, but this occasion demanded especially that he should lend his «aid in averting the dread calamity that threatened the Sta e's welfare. He did not d: viate from a line of plain, substantial argument during his entire remarks, uoless it was to occasivaully direct at the ‘new Constitation one of his irresistible shafts of tarcasm, As a thinker “he has no poet ou'thé ‘Pacific Coast. ‘He has a remarkable facility of making intelligible'to hie hearurs the ‘Bubject ‘of taxation, ingo: pdratious, Chinese immigration,’ and’ all otber matters treated upon #0 ‘absurdly by the new “novel.” It has been characterized by old residents of both sides ag one of the most logical speeches vver deliv. ered in Nevada county, “ Ata late hour the meeting adjourned, As the train iu returning was passing the Idaho mine, :the niédh employed there yreeted it with cheer after cheer, and ignited a monster fire-ball that lighted up the scene for a great distance. Not enough people turn‘ed out to make a respectable . ‘sized prayer meeting. * Clitus Bar bour, the Vice President of the W orkingmen’ 8 Party, made ‘the talk of the evening from a stand on Pine strect, Such @ talk! It wasa shallow, nonsensical effort, such as might have been expected of an ignorant but—conceited police court shyst< who wanted office. He appeared to take the handful of ladies and gentlemen he was addressing for a delegation ‘from the ‘sandlots, and gauged his expressions accordingly. The result was that the intelligent portion of them were disgusted, and wrote the speaker down an unmitigated ass, even though many of them believed in the principles ne sQ feebly represented, ee eee Bed-rock Siruck. Bed-rock was struck a few days ago in the Excelsior Deep Gravel Mining Company’ s claim near Forest “Hin, Placer County. Some of the specimens are wonderfully rich. The necessary drifts are being run to extract the valuable deposit, and ina few weeks the superintendent, Mr. Join Borland, expects to be fairly at work producing the where: with to pay dividends, The ¢ompany is rather a close corparation, ‘the principal owners being Messrs. Watson, Borland, -Harley, Chiso)vich, Plageman, Kanzee anda few other Sau Fr rancisco ‘merchants. oe & A Reprendhtaaive Man. ee SS The San Francisco Stock Exchange” says ‘Judge Niles Searls of Nevada county is out strong against the new Constitution. He cowld hardly be any other way, living in such a county and being’ An intelligent and repFesentative man. Nevada county by the destruction of its many industries, would be ruined by the adoption of the new Constitutien. The announcement that Judge Searls is against the Constitution i is important . however, as it was previously stated he was in favor it. oes > ‘Mearneyites Put this in your Pipes and Smoke it.2 Nevada City and County will give a handsome majority against the Sandlot document on the 7th of May. If the election had taken place two weeks ago it would have gone for the Thing by about 1000 majority. Today, by well authenticated figures, Nevada county is good for 300 majority AGAINsT the new Constitution. Mark our prediction. —— —— 2 -e—. What it Will Cure. There is but little, if any doubt, that the new Constitution will cure the smallpox in men, and the glanders in horses, ally raised Howard and Terry from their political graves, and it will deubtless do several other fabulous things. Unfortunately, it does not propuse to do anything really useful to the State. Flocking Like Sheep. The voters of Nevada county whe Nave been with the new Constitution previously are now flocking like sheep to the ranks of order ‘ahd intelligence and justice. The Kearneyite leaders are avhining piteously, vheck the stam pede. ae ‘work It has already parti-' but they can devise no emacs * to} observations and reports while visitimg your place last Summer, that made gotisiderable inquiry among my friends here, on my returo, hoping to enlist a party or parties in ‘the enterprise, as [ wrote you soon after my return home, and it you Femeupber, it was about the Huse ‘otthe “Coustitutional Conveation;’ aod monied nen were even this early timid about the possible results of that convention. But now, Heaven 4 \ . help us, these-men of all others are among the most frigbtened-ond panic stricken, lest the hydraheaded monster ye ept the new Constitution . may actually become a verity; that that mongrel muostrosity, that outcome of the S8und lots, the pet of Dennis Kearney, the hope of cemmunism, socialism, nihilism ard anarchy may become the Jaw of this fair land. These men are frightened, and well they may be, and sure, they have no time to talk about anything else save the guestion that is holding every dear interest in peril. It is nolittle matter, this, when a)l the interest of those who have made California what she is, isconfromed with an ignorant mob of foreigners who woula pu}! down and leve) this. fair fabrie, the of so many patient years. If this was only a polition] quéstion, we should not pow be ar. rayed against each other in geathlike strife, On the onehand, all the intelligent, reading. law abiding citizens, the merchants, mephanics, machinists, clergy, bapkerg, ippuraice companies, school departments, taanufacturers. miners, farme;zs, all respectable and intelligent Geszmane, Irish, English, Freneh. and other nationalities. On the other hand, Kearney and the sand lot trampe, egged on by that mos} djsreputable of all papers, the Chronicle, with such ae Terry, Downey, Rgrbour and Campbell. as ggmp followers—men, some of whom are inelcrimes; others who were sent away by an outraged populace when our coubtry was §uhting the rebellion. Look at this pigture, and dg not wonder that gapita) is timid and ready to hide ipeelf, or leave. the country which is “threatened by such dire calamity a8 the Tatifica; tion of the new Constitution. I have noy yesjded bere py eptynine years; came like many others, poor, and lage worked like a slave most of the time; have made many improvements outof my earnings, spending thousands on thousands of dollars:to employ those poorer than myself; and much asl am attached tothe country where my children were born and raised, bound as I am here by a thonsand ties to me most dear, intent as 1 have always been in making this my only home, I could not, would not remain here, if afterall the gigantic exertions of every gocd moral ‘element, where gence Sf the State had failed as against the lawless mob spirit at debased and ignorant men, I do not believe that God in his goodness will so afflict and curse a land, fairer thao which the sun never shone upeo. I believe the men who have’ braved the vicissitudes of pioneering in the early days of California Will not be humiliated for their trials, punished for their zealand fidelity to all that is worth living for; and J trust, and still believe, that these miscreants who are plotting the ruin of our beautiful State, will be sunk in oblivion on the 7th of May. And that you, ny iriend, are ‘halive to your duty, and aiding to swell a large wajority in Nevada county against the new Conetitation, is the fervent wish of Yo ur friend and obedient servant, @ Frrexnp.—You ack me if . know} you have a jyrouusing property, 1} 7, wtile they have no money for-open-}— j ing new mines, until the defeat ot this seditious instramens is. made igible to office: on agcount of their) the brain and heart of the intellie} { Teachers’ Institate, ‘Called to order at 10 o'clock A. An:application forlettersof administration upon the estate, of OO. W: Kidd has been made by Phoebe Ann Kidd of San Francisco. The estate is valued a. over $450,000, but an indebtedness exists of about $390,000. ‘The bulk of the estate consists ‘of a house and lot on Sutter street, valued at $30,000; twenty hoyges and) lotsjon Hyde and Tyler: streets, val-) ued at $55,000; Bank of Stockton . stock, $120,000; . Pacific Rolling! Mill stock, $30,000; Farmers’ National Bank of San Jose stock, $50,000. The petitioner avers that sbv is tbe widow of dece sed, and that the heirs are bereeif and two brothers and twosisters of deceased. > — —_ ——_ Fhe Idahe Mige Employes. It has been stated Py certain ad-! the employes of the idaho Mining Company will many of them vpke in favor of the Thing. We feel confident that the asserAqnis a barefaced falsehood. The Idaho, under the managewent of the Coleman Brothers, is one of the best mines in tke State to work in. Their workmen are treated like men, and not brutes. ft is the very hight of folly for the Kearneyites to attempt to make the public believe that the Idaho: boys will take any step calculated to inause * the men thay work for. Me Took It. Fhe Postmaster yesterday notified a gentleman that he had a registered letter dor him. ‘It was delivered to him. Qn the outside of it the words $35 were written. The letter was partially opened and he was undecided about taking “it fearing it was short of the amount which it called for. He mustered up his courage however, and finished the opening of the letter and found. it contained $45. He took it without grumbling any More. SS eee Rousing _Meeting; There will be s 3 rousing meeting at North San Juan to-night. A gentleman from the Ridge informs us that about all the conveyances owned from North Bilgamfield ta French Oorral will be brought inta use mm eartying men to San Juan tolisten to Hon. A. B.
