Tae Great Murrary ‘CoMBINATIONS.
Now.that. the :great. purpose. of General.
Grant has been accomplished in the capture
of Richmond, we are enabled to look frdm
. the grand results back tothe great combina_.,tions by which they were secured. The re“sponsibility placed upon the Union General
wai great, bit he® boldly grappled all difficulties and met every issue with a ready
solution. His judgment carried him “across
true point.” He met the General whom
the rebels based their hopes of success upon,
and instead of permitting him toenter Maryland as did the former Union commanders.
Grant took the responsibility of measuring
strength at the Wilderness and at Spott.aylvania, each time compelliag Lee to con‘tract his lines until he was hemmed in at
,Richmond. Grant then sent Sheridan into
‘the Shoriundoalt to attend to Early, while he
waited patiently before the capital of seces"tia, heedless of all muriurs, until the full. ness of time should come for action. Every
detail in the great-combination was attend“ed to. Sherman if the meantime was
tharching from Atlanta to Savannah, thence
through South Carolina into North Carolina.
Ii that State the army of Sherman was
without a base, but im good time, though the
_ firat attempt under Butler failed, the provident Grant had secured Wilmington and
opened communication with the army.—
Then just at the: moment when it‘ was demanded Sherman and Schofield’s armies
Were united. The rebels could not discern
the object of these movements, while ‘copporheads predicted that the armies would
‘be defeated: and congratulated themselves
‘upon the fact that-their friends, the rebels,
were better off because Lee's strategy had
concentrated his forces and decreased the
amount of territory to defend. But when
‘Wilmington was taken and Sheridan was.
,called tu Richmond and sent for a raid up-on the enemy’s channel of supply, Richmond
‘was thrown into a panic, but too late.—
Sherman was marching north, rapidly pres_Sing Johnston back, and both the rebel ar.
mies were placed in a position where either could be attacked with great probability
ofeuccess. The great Union armies were
now ina position when communication could
be openéd between them in a few hours.—
The rebel General now found himself shut
in by Union bayonets.. The rebel chief attacked, was defeated and compelled to surrender toGrant. The object ofthe Lieutenant General was accomplished, the Confederate “shell” broken and the rebellion crashed. His plans were complicated and so well
concealed that it was impossible to under‘stand’ them until they were Weiiééessos —
Neither complaints at home nor difficulties
in the field could bend him from his pu :
Steadily he worked out the great probiém
until the grand result was obtained so suddonly that the world could scarcely realize
it. Now we are enabled to.look from the
“Fedult to the details and are compelled to
acknowledge the greatness of the mind that
conceived and the brave men who have carried them out
