see e ena Manager a Connty ic Press, THURSDAY, MAY 10. JIM HILL'S WIFE. A Cleveland (Ohio) dispatch of Tuesday says : There is much excitement here ov‘er the treatment of Mrs. J. M. Hill by the Huron Street Hospital manent. She was the wife of exief Hill. Ten years ago she was stricken with bone rot. She had a mn amputated and was covered with The hospital took her in charge but when her funds had given Sas told her to leave, The matter was brought to the attention of 9 morning new: rand was sup= ony presse t hold of t-and the fg wild wit wees tion. Hill is now Fire Chief in land, California. This writer knew Mrs. Hill well after her husband had cruelly left her and their pretty little daughter to take care of themselves in the city where they had once occupied a high social’ position and been surrounded with all the comforts that “money could buy. She was a woman . of refinement, and much respected by those who knew her. She made a brave effort to earn a respectable living, and was succeeding fairly when her health began to fail, She struggled on till her limbs refused to longer do their duty, and then sud~“denly disappeared from the sight of her many friends, In the dispatch from Cleveland we learn her heaitrending fate. God only knows what may have become of her child and companion, who is, if now alive, a woman grown. If the press of Oakland wit to know what kind of a man they have at the head of their Fire Department let them investigate his record in Cleveland. Any of the newspapers there can, if so inclined, furnish them with a rare sensation that they ought of their own accord to have ferreted out years ago. . RSE RINT MT SS TT Tux schools and public offices in Brooklyn will be closed the day of the bridge opening. Govenor Cleveland will be given a reception in the evening. The Board of Aldermen of Brooklyn voted $5,000 for illuminations, and reso!ved that the lion’s head ornament on the bridge be removed, and the Government coat-of-arms and American eagle substituted. MissHowarp, the American female physician in China, now treating the wife of the great Viceroy, is besieged by many ladies of wealthy . families, ‘‘who would rather die than be treated by a foreign male physician.” Her success is but one indication of the need of female physicians in the far east. Tue San Francisco Post falls into a gloomy mood now andthen. Here is an instance from its columns : “There is talk thet Sarah Bernhardt intends leaving her husband, If she should do so life will indeed be for 5 him a Sahara desert.” Miss VERONA BALDWIN was adjudged insane by the Probate Court of Pierce county, Washington Territory, on the 7th, and was taken to the Territorial Insane Asylum at Steilacoom. Work will be resumed ‘on the Washington monument, and before the season closes ic is expected that 100 feet will be added to the ‘shaft, _ which now towers 320 feet in the air. Mo.cany says the statement that John Roach’s ship is the first iron vessel launched in America is a mis-take, as Mrs. Mulcahy frequently launches iron ves@els at him. A sTaTuE to Peter Cooper will be erected by popular subscription in the public square just south of the Cooper Union, New York. A piano was to be lifted in mid-air and played upon by a spiritJ} hand, and a number of materialized spirits were to appear upon the platform, Instead of this a closed cabinet was used. Nevertheless, the audience ‘were my stitied, and : when their Committe¢ of two came out of the dark cabinet and said they had felt numerous very live persons touching them and squeeze past them while they had their hands folded upon the medium’s head, a number of the audience rushed upon the stage, went into the cabinet and. pulled up a trap ‘door and the “Professor was roughly handled until rescued from the infuriated mob by the police.
