ments of rich quartz leads within the past ‘ax months has been « matter of surprise to those who have been most confident of the. great wealth of Nevada county, and yet we "doubt if one out often of the leads opened which the niost careless business man would hesitate long before embarking in any other thing after this stylet Indications are discovered upon the top and immediately the claim is staked off and a contract let to take -out from six toten tons, The rock, cab and all is taken to the mill, and unless thia pays _ the ownérs of the claim abandon it. Hundreds of leads have been worked in this way snd abandoned because they atesupposed to be worthless, and those who have spent a few dollars go off and talk about the uncertainty of quarts mining, oe: We do not belfeve that this kind of mining will ever result in good to the county and rarely in enriching those who engage in it. ~~~ A few inatancés are knowh Where leads have paid from the surface down, but in the large majority of cases the most valuable mines sre worked for some time without profit. Many of the most valuable mines in this county to-day were worked at great loss vatil after they were opened below the surface water. The great tiinetal wealth of the county is just begun to be developed, and in ten years from now the steam-whietlé of quartz mills and the thumping of . stamps will he heard in every ravine and on every hill-side in the county. When miners ‘better understand the theory of quartz mining and have'had more experience in prac' tice, a very different kind of prospecting wi obtain and great, good will be the. result. In almost every township in the county the best “indications” have been found, and in 1 ly prospected claims and failed within the last two years, nor do we think there will be many failures mpany may be taken as an example. In this instasce over six thoussnd dollars were expended before the lead was found and now ~ the company bas one of the -best ledges in who would make a fortune by it must do so by labor and petseverance. ‘No mining project should be undertaken with the idea of ite paying from the start. Those who expect this, in nine cases out of ten will be deceived. Let the ledges be tested by sinking shafts'at one or more points below the water level and then if they ure found to pay a company may safely inour the expense of erecting mills and other Lena atn't in hands of Attorney.. 68 00 machinery for working the mints. The tunnel spoken of has ¢ost $200 per foot. A few days since Mr. Clark tried the virtue of fire as an agent and found it to work to a charm. A cofd of wood was placed in the end of the tunnel . and left to burn, after which the rock was found softened and easily worked, and at an expense of about $25. By this method he succeeded ip running the tunnel two feet further into the hill. We learn that the experiment will be continued and the method which cars can be attached and hose for the Purpose of cooling the tunnel after the fire has done its work. We have no doubt that this new style of running tunnels will be generally adopted where the rock is subject to the action of fire. Granite can be worked to even better advantage than slate, we should judge.
