On Thursday evening last, a Chinaman was shot and killed while engaged in robbing the sluices in the mining claims of Davis, Bowen, and others’‘atN. San Juan. The owners of these claims, having repeatedly suffered from the depredations of sluice robbers, have had for some time past a watchman in their emplay. He had just gone on the sluice, and while-on—his.rounds dis——Sovered somebody in the sluice.— Waiting until he had fully satisfied himself that the sluice was being robbed, he drew a ‘‘bead’’ on the fellow with a shot gun, loaded with buckshot, and let: the robber have the contents. Two shots entered his ’ head and_one passed through his hat. The watchman, Jos. Knoblet, ran to 'the'spot where the scoundrel fell, and found the fellow to be a Chinaman who had been frequently seen in the neighborhood. There was found upon the person of the robber, a spoon _ designed for sluice robbing purposes, a five barreled revolver, and a whistle made from bone or ivory. _ In the morning afterwards, when parties went to the place where the fellow had been killed; to bury him, his body: was non est, his confederates having carried it away. This popular troupe will perform atthe Theatre on Tuesday evening next. are greeted with crowded houses, and they are worthy of it. The plays selected for hext Tuesday evening, are, ‘‘Tén Nights in a Bar Room,”’ and ‘‘Kiss in the Dark.’’ The performance is given for the benefit of the Griffin Sisters, two most worthy : young ladies, and we hope: they, will be received by a crowded house. The Company is composed of Wm. Ellerton, a star actor, D. F. Dodge, ‘splendid in Yankee characters, Tony Ward, a regular “brick,” J. Taking it all in all, it isa great deal better than the average of companies that has visited our city in several years, Fun for the Boys. Matters and things having become very monotendous in town, B. Thousands fall a prey to disease not because the maladies that effect them are necessarily fatal, but because they lack the requisite amount of active vitality to make a valiant resistance to the enemy. It is a wise precaution to keep the body always in a state of defense—always prepared to ‘‘fend ders and to baffle the evil influence of damp miasma and su theometrical changes. There is no difficulty in doing this. It isa fact as well authenticated ds that two and two make four, that Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is specially adapted to this purpose, ating and regulating properties are superior to those of anyother medicine in the world. During the twenty years that it has been in general use, ample opportunities have been afforded to compare its medicinal properties with those of other preparations claiming to be of a similar class, and the result has been its adoption by the American people as tion into evéry civilized portion of the western hemisphete, and_an annual sale which dwarfs into insignificance the demand for all its would-be competitors. The recotd upon which its popularity rests is a-curiosity in medical literature, for it includes ¢n almost unlimited variety of human ailments and such a variety of human ailments and disabilities. In fact, rio other remedy possesses Such @ variety of hygienic virtues, and it is to these characteristics that it owesits prestige as. a household medicine. ‘ 4 DAILY TRANSCRIPT BOOK AND JOB PRINTING ESTABLISHMENT.
