Beforo conventions and _, before ‘elections candidates ate generally very sociable. “At such times they put on their blandest smiles and bow to all they meet, During a campaign a candidate will be introduced ‘to thousands of people. If he fails to remember, after election, the name and feitares of each of those he met during thé campaign, he is thought to. be ungrateful,’ and each one 50 forgotten becomes a political enemy thereafter. Because a—mah spends “To Land Owners. Those owning land in this county which they wish to dispose of, will dg well to correspond with the Bureau of Information at Sacramento, from whom. we have received the following ci*cular, se SacwaMENTO, May 1, 1875. Dear Sir: The facilities which our position affords to, learn-the character and wants of the immigrants now arriving among us, enables us .o State that a very large proportion of them are farmers who have conie to buy land and make homes. We believe, therefore, the present to bea good opportunity for those who have lands for sale, to dispose of the same. One of the principal objects of the Bureau of Infurmatiou, is to bring buyers and sellers of land together, and thus accommodate both and faand the development of its resources. If you haveuny land for sate-and will “his money freely before election, in . factgpends half what he will re.eive as fees for his whole term of office,. ho i8\considered niggardly ‘and mean if. he-does not keep it up _ ‘throughout the term, Some people “think they confer a favor. never to be forgotten—an aet which ling tobe continually rewarded—itf they cast character dnd the terns of sale, we will give all such information to the many inquirers with whom we are brought in contact, deavor to send you purchasers. For these seryices no charges will be made to-either party, the Bureau being supported by the voluntary subseription of «those who feel-an interest in helping immigrauts to find homes and 1n contribusing to the Cilitate the settlement of the ‘State . furnish .the-Bureau with-its. location, wud will en-, An Eccentric Man Gone. e Captain Ned. Wakeman ‘died at fast. His name is familiar to most Californians. He was a brave man, and threughout his eventful ‘career seemed to delight in placing himself in positions where he could exhibit his bravery. He would put himself into positions where more prudent commanders would never be found; but he would, by the, exercise of his coolness aud bravery, always come out safely. Mark Twain in his “Revehing it,” records some of his exploits, and they are ‘only. the few of many-of his many deeds of daring. He has for some time been suffering to succumb to the common enieuty.— ~Declines'a’ ‘Heselectionof the present month wrote. Senator Sargent a letter asking if he would be a candidate for re-election at the expiration of his present term. To this, the Senator replies that he will will under no circumstanges accept the position for another term,. This will put the base insinuations of op. ~——"-———ggoupationis—suppoesed-tolabor for . . ponents, that Sargent is -putting up their vote fora man ,for an office; “They forget that the officer gives in ervices value received for the salary he gets. An employee in any other his own benefit, and is not expected . ‘to spend all -his earnings in treating his employer. He is employed: to perform work and not as a favor. ° _*& a So itis with—public~officers:— “Pret Colusa Sun, speaking on this subject, says: Some people pretend to fiad fault with men who are candidates for. office for being more familiar about election time than at any other, but there is really no ubjection to”it. If it is known that a merchant wants to employ a clerk, is it wrong for a young man, ‘who would like the place, to try to make . _ —________4he acquaintance of that’ merchant? Would he not very naturally be more polite to him than on ordinary occusions? Wonld he not. tryin every ‘way to proves to the merchant his: peculiar qualifications? It. is the same exactly with the candidate. The people want ta employ a man _to do certain work;-the candidate ~ thinks he is qualified and he speaks “to the parties authorized to employ him. He seeks their acquaintance just as the salesman seeks the agquaintance of the merchant. If the young man in search of a situation should mention the ‘matter to one member of a firm, he would hardly meet another member on the street without appearing to notice him, as he might do if not expecting to get the situation. We are all perhaps too much prone to find fault when a common sense view does not beat us. " on. . We therefore say to the boys— “goin and shake hands with everybody, getwell acquainted and get the office if you can. 3Patreutas Home Industry. If every resident of a place would _jpatronize his ewn townsmen busi“ness would be much livelier * It is true many things can be bought ‘cheaper in the cities; but, if all should do their trading there, what ‘would become of interior towns Men invest money in business here, and expend their profits in muking improvements. They vre taxed upon their money and business and help to sustain the town aud county. government, They sell as reasona-. bly as their business will warrant. If you trade with them it k eps the money paid in circulation here, The beuefit derived. from _ patronizing home industries is mutual. Busihess men themselves some times set ~a bad example. They believe in the rule of others patronizing them, but do not acknowledge the same rule when they can make a few dollars by purchasing elsewhere. _If~ they desire their townsmen to patronize them they should set the exaniple. It isa poor rule that will not work ‘both ways. . Furniture, groceries, _ ‘dry goods, and other articles may be “bought a tide cheaper at the nie~—-—-itropelis-than here; yet-it-is-pelicy . ‘for residents to buy at home and give ‘our tradesmen the ‘benefit. 'The‘same fact.is true-of ether ines ‘of trade. If a tradesman buys all he uses at the city except what he has to sell he can not complain of eothers who do likewise. We know of several instances where men in business do not practice what they desire their customers to do. If you ‘want somebody to tivtkte you~you, must tickle some one yourself, 4 0 + ‘. the dust. aud the roud is as smooth ‘generat prosperity of the State.
