This liberality of the Club should be appreciated by our people. The Benevolent. [email protected]—the has relieved all cases of want in the city that have been known, and has also been the means of ridding. the town of the army of street beggars who annoy our citizens every season. A large proportion of these roving mendicants are imposters, either too lazy to work or seeking for an opportunity to steal. When they come to your doors it is only ‘necessary to refer them to the Society in order to get rid of them. The Committee never give a dollar unless first satisfied that it is needed. Sach an institution we say is a blessing to any commanity. Our dancing people now have an opportunity to enjoy a pleasant dance, and at the same time know that their money will go to sustain the Society, The Hall ought to THE THEATRE To-NIGHT.—Mr. Bar rett, supported by John McCullough, and the best troupe that has visited this city for years, will open the Nevada Theatre this evening. The play will be Hamlet, in-which Mr. Barrett is said . ‘ to be equal to any man on the American stage, MeCullough will take the part of the Ghost, and also the First Actor. He is a great favorite, and one of the best actors on the coast. Mrs. Sophie Edwin is an old favorite of our people, but she has not been here for many years. She takes the part of Ophelia. The other characters will be well sustained, and the;company will nessed in this city. It is seldom that the people of larger cities have an opportunity of witnessing the performances of 80 good a company. ap nite Oo More Rain:—After several days of threatening weather rain commenced falling yesterday morning. At first it was a light mist, but soon increased into a lively shower. We have had some very warm weather. The roads had become dusty, the crops needed rain, and therefore no one will complain unless the storm continues. Yesterday morning the refreshing shower almost made vegetation jump. The miners will not complain as the rain is warm and willhelp to carry off the snow.— The only danger to crops now is that it may clear off cold and frosty. Rev. N. Reasoner, Presiding Elder of this District, who is now East, has been appointed agent of the American Bible Society for the States of Nevada and California. ] ‘ial THe Democracy at their late Convention in this city, says the Alta, paseed a resolution censuring “this Radical Congress” for its failure to pay. for Alaska. While they had their hand in the members of the Convention might as well have censured some of the members of their own party, just to show their impartiality. The best speech in favor of payment of Alaska has been made by Mr. Higby, the only Union member from California in the House, and we do not recollect having seen any word in favor of the measure from either Axtell or Johnson. The former, having the San Francisco primaries to ’ , look after, is excusable, but Fernando Wood and W. E. Robinson, of New York, both sterling Democrats, have distinguished themselves by their opposition to paying for Alaska.
