SAS BR etree xe NEVADA oats. CALIFORNA SATURDAY, MAY 16,1868. A Tue Jury.—The jury will be called to-day and the votes of Senators recorded for or against sustaining the charges made by the House of Representatives against Johnson; Jt will mot be uninteresting toknow how the Senate is --gonstituted. Of the fifty-four members of the Senate, forty-two are Republicans and twelve Democrats. Thirtysix votes will sustain the charges and’ therefore six Republicans may vote against impeachment without defeating a verdict. Among the doubtful Republicans some six or eight have been mentioned. Fessenden, Trumbull and Grimes have taken ground against it, and are probably so far committed that . ’ they will not vote for any of the articles. . The Democrats have all through the trial acted: as partizans and not as judges. Even when the testimony was being given, they showed by speechae es.and votes that before_the evidence was given they had determined upon a course of action, while on the other hand the Republican Senators dealt impartially in the matter, excluding all evidence of a questionable character and giving the counsel for the President every opportanity to vindicate him if it were possible. It may therefore -—be concluded that. the Democrats will vote as partizans and not as jurors in Law existed and had been violated b the Prosident, even under plea of test ing ite constitutionality, with the evidence now before the Senate in the case of the Tenure of Office Law, every Democratic vote could be counted on for impeachment. The President has only violated a law of the Rump Congress and of course he will be sustained by the Democracy. 1t will therefore require seven Republican votes to clear him and these we do not believe can be gained. The evidence in the case of the removal of Stanton and appointment of Thomas is so clear that the charge must be sustained unless Senators are false to their records. If the Tenure of Office Law doesnot apply to the Cabinet as some of the Republicans claim, then the President is guilty of appointing an officer during the session of the Senate without its concurrence, in violation ofa law which has been in force for years and he ought to be adjudged guilty. If the Tenure of Office Law does apply, as he has himself held, then he is equally guilty and should be removed. If the Senators. the case. But if the Fugitive ot _ dose this opportunity to rid the nation of a dangerous and despotic ruler, they . will ‘be held accountable by the country for the evils which will follow. It is not likely that Johnson, after being cleared, will remain inactive. He will soon have control of the War Departmeat and will continue to set aside the laws of Congress in defiance of the will of the people. The decision of the Senate to-day will tell for good or evil oP ‘on the future of the wong: Was Ir Poison %—The sudden and violent illness of three Republican Sen{ ators on the eve of the vote upon im_ peachment, has aroused the suspicion that they were poisoned. The parties affected in this way are Senators Grimes, “Howard and Conkling. The first has declared for acquittal, and the others were for conviction, The symptoms -‘were alike in the three cases, enly that Grimes was not so severely affect ed as the others. It is said foul play was apprehended and the Senators were cautioned against drinking ont of pitchers in the Capitol The diabolical . spirit of the Johuson party indicates that they are capable of any infamy. PEANUTS.—We hear, says the Sacramento Bee, that this crop, which grows 80 luxuriently along the banks of the Sacramento, and which has been. cultivated with profit, is not likely to amount to much this year, because the land has been too wet for cultivation, and therefore but small 5 cama have been sowed, THe MvcrpERER.—Ex-Sheriff J. C ] Glark arrived if this dity yesterday morning from San Fran¢isco, says the Virginia Enterprise of the 14th, bringing with him Eugene Lefevre, the Canadian Frenchman who some two years since killed a German on a wood ranch north of this city by stabbing him with a sheath-knife while at dinner, merely because the German said that he talked more than he worked, and the . man who inflicted injuries upon Jailor Gregory in making his escape from the county jail which resulted in Gregory’s death some seven days after. Mr. Glark found Lefevre in the California State Prison, to which he was sent from Calaveras county in 1867, for an assault with intent to kill. Theterm for which he was sentenced had almost expired, not two days of his time yet remaining, when Mr, Clark recognized him. He knew Mr. Clark the moment he saw him and attempted to dodge out of it. Finding at last that it was uselens $0 ay.de bide Gn ainonh bie tats he acknowledged that he was the Eugene Lefevre who broke jail in this city—he was sentenced in Calaveras county under the name of Jules Dana. Mr. Clark then told him that ho was going to take him back to Storey county, when he quickly said: “You can’t do anything with me for killing old man Gregory— . he didn’t die soon enough after he was injured.” Mr. Clark told him that he thought something could be done with him for thé deed, but first he had the killing of the German to answer for. He then said: “Well, take, me where you please and do with me what you please. I-have never had anypeace since I have been here. I knew that you would come at last.” He said that during ull the time of his confinement in the prison he had suffered terribly from fear, and was always expecting Clark to come and find him out. Whenever he saw a party of Strangers coming he thought Clark was one of the namber, and tried to hide himself._He} said he-never felt safe for a moment . . exeept when locked in his cell or: shut “up by-himeelf ina room. He said that in case Mr. Clark had not come and discovered him, it was his intention, upon being set at liberty, to have gone to Mexico, thence to Texas and from there to have made his way home to Canada. Mr. Clark has never ceased to keep a . bright look-out for Lefevre, and was determined, cost what it might, to capture and bring him back if he ever caught sight of him. This determination and watchfulness Lefevre seems to have constantly felt and dreaded. It has been so long since the murder of the German that it will now perhaps be a difficult matter to find the wood choppers who were witnesses to it, yet for aught we know they may still be in this vicinity—it will be hard for him to escape from both of his bloody deeds. A Pre Fieut.—Yesterday morning @ couple of individuals under the influence of fighting whiskey retired to Prospect Hill, beyond the corporation line, for the purpose of testing each others fighting qualities. They fought about three rounds, throwing out their “feelers” after each others “peepers” in the most approved style of the ring, At the end of the third round one of the parties failed to come to time, and “threw up the sponge,” so to speak. Some “claret” flowed, but neither party got half as badly punished as he ought to have been. Coming Bacx.—A bill has_ passed . ? the House of Representatives by a vote gia, Louisiana, North and South Carolina to the Union, and for the admission of their representatives to seats in Congress. The work of reconstruction goes bravely on. # THERE are rumors to the effect that two Republican Senators have sold out on the impeachment for large sums of money. ‘The managers are investigating the charges, and if established, the Senators will probably lose their votes as well as their seats.
