69. = —The Leag se dt meetings in their deliberations an ject they expect to attain by ‘these “means it is difficult to devise. If. as they claim, they are contending against the use of giant. powder and single hand drills, on account of the deleterious effect upon health, what good will «their secret meetings do to remedy the evil? Every step thus far taken by the Leaguers indicates that they have tlie very worst advisers; men who are “money, and who tare no more for the ia ts of working men than they do for thé laws of the country. Such ad. visers may lead the miners to attempt to interfere with the rights of property or induce them to resort to force to prevent those who are willingto wortk as mine owners maydesire, from-doing 80. .If ‘they follow this advice, they must array themselves against both the _ ¢9unty and. State authority, and in the . @nd they will be the only sufferers.— Working men should be slow to enter upon a contest in which failure is certain for them. Those who unite in the movements of the League will, after spending all the money they have, find themselves out of employment and “without opportunity to get work. Let all such avoid these secret mectings “and stand aloof from those who counsel & forcible interference with the property and liberty of other men. ‘They are onémies of working men, dangerous to thie county, and in case a difficulty occars will be the first to sneak out of it, leaving the less guilty to be punished. r Tuer Worst Governed Crry.—The city of New York, where the Democ~ racy have for years held undisputed sway, has. probably the most extravegent and corrupt government in the world, The ministers of the gospel denounce from the pulpit the venality and corruption of the judiciary of. the city, and the Times declares that ‘they are drawing business from the city. The comments are based upon the removal . of the Pacific Railroad office to Boston. —_he Fimee says: “Fisk isa titigious) follow, worthy of ho space*in these columns, and the company and its man, . . agers may have been, for aught we know, guilty of frauds in their dealings, and yet the matter be of no general importance; but when the administration of justice falls into suspicion and disgrace in this city, when great public corporations begin to flee from it, because they believe they cannot get justice here;-a-crisis of grave import is before ws; and we feel it to be our duty to call public attention to it, and also to this case, not because we feel-any interests in the fortunes of ite incidents illustrate the course of judicial administration before some of our judges, which deeply concerns this city and the whole country.” A movement is also on foot to increase tho salary of Sheriff O'Brien, and this corrupt official boasts that Governor Hoffman will sign the bill if it passes. ‘The 7imes figures up the salary at present at $300,000 per year, and the new bill‘will give him over a million perannum: Who would be President a a es AL BON pect Hr a a a i areas ss 38 is = opportunity offered to make a little . . ) Seigtist, in hibition at the Glenbrook Park this af [Sgeeanices caemeer sneer ve mmmnncrnt a a ees imap fect in length, will be suspended in — yo oe Q ed the daring. youth with a polished steel velocipede. “Master August will give a. grand exs A. wire rope, 200 . mento Union of the following : B, Reverdy Johnson has telegraphed his retirement from his mission, and says he has acted with zeal in the inA pitt terests of the country, and in exact ac— velocipede at full speed the entire length. A velocjpéde race'for a purse of money will also come offbetween Nevada and Grasse Valley amateurs., The exhibition will last two hours, and during that time August Seigrist will make four trips with his velocipede on the wire. No SERVICES.—Owing’ to the abBence of the pastor, who is attending the State Sunday School Convention at San Francisco, there will be no preaching at the Congregational Church _ to-. day. Sunday School as usual at 12} o'clock. AMERICAN MINERS.— We understand Capt. Lee, of the Empire mine, has telegraphed to Amador and other counties in the State that he will give employment to all the idle men that desire work,on application to his mine. ~ MeTnopist Catrcu.—Woe are yequested by the Trustees of the Methodist Church, to state that the Tepairs are completed, and that servicea-will “Sabbath School moots at 14 o'clock. PATENT CREAM STRAINER.—Walter Ballantine, of the United. States Engineer Battallion, has invented a patent cream strainer for removing cream from milk. The contrivance is very timple, comprising an ordinary eream pan, with an inner frame véry similar to a pan without a bottom, and with a hoop around it. On the bottom of this frame, or bottomless pan, is fastened a piece of gauge and the frame is then-set into the pan. When the cream rises, it is removed in the morning by simply lifting out the inner pan \or' frame. The inventor is the same who invented a ro* tary cartridge box that attracted some attention a few months since. A LarGr Haut or Crans.—At North Beach, the old Chinaman, who has for so many years monopolized the crabcatching business in that locality, made . the unusual haul of upwards of one thousand crabs. The number caught’ actually surprised the Celestial, who never before had such a streak of luck. He immodiately selecteda few of the smallest ones and prepared them into sacred food for his favorite “Josh” house. A Leavenworth paper thinks: it “an evidence of the westward march of civ— ilization” that the Kansas Legislature appropriated $1,400 for tobacco for the penitentiary prisoners and only $300 foy preaching the gospel to them. There are also three special Agents at large; and for each district an Inspector. The Sixth, Divisjon includes Kansas, Texas, Nevada, California, Oregon and the Territories. For Inspectors, are appointed Wm. B. Duffield, of New Mexico ; John B. Underwood, of Oregon; and Alfred Barstow, of California. For special Mail Agent, James B. Speed. For the money order sérvice, Joseph W. Briggs. General Logan has been re-elected . Commander and General Fairchild, of Wisconsin, Vice Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. An editorof the London Star,in a letter to this countty, describes the English as believing that our Govern. ment and people desire war; and that .we made our demands extreme in order to bring it about. ~ TRUCKEE Irems.— The_ Truckee Tribune is now issued as a semi-weekly. The paper is much improved in ap~ pearance, and gives evidence of . prosperity in its advertising columns. The Tribune has the following items: On Saturday night some parties entered the boarding house of Hoadley & Co's mill, and robbed it of some two hundred dollars and someone hundred gol Jars worth of jewelry and watches. The men were asleep in the house at the timé but none heard the. robbers at Ahéir work of breaking open trunks, eteScarcely a night passes but some cit. izen is robbed or,some house broken How long must, this be endeared ?—The wtmost surveil= ance upon the part of our competent and worthy officials, serves to keep thea only in abeyance just so long-as We have now, we. believe, twelve out of sixteen cellsin the county jail, and if justice was done to.a large number of

At this, John Doe, as we will call him, threw the contents of his glass into the barkeeper's face. ‘keeper being one of those men not at all backward about resenting an. insult, ‘started after him.
